My question is would you guys recommend using my 3wt after opener while steel are still in the creeks...I want to target resident trout but don't want to hook into a steel on it and break it....should I wait until summer when there's less chance of an accidental hookup?

I wouldnt wait, if you know there are residents there and its an open season go for it. As long as you use the right leader you shouldn't ever break your rod fighting a fish unless it was already damaged.

this

now I'm curious, what exactly is the right leader? does this only apply to fly fishing?

(context: never been fly fishing but interested in getting started)

What I mean by that is using the leader your rod is rated for so the leader breaks before your rod does. It applies to any fishing rod.

Makes sense, thanks for clarifying.

Ya I guess it makes sense...landing a huge steel on say 6x tippet would most likely be a challenge and a half especially paired with a 7'6 3wt(not that I would want to give it a try lol) but I am so anxious to try out the 3wt gonna be a heck of a lot more fun than my 5 wt

+1...saves your rod. it won't be safe up until mid May when targeting residents. Although steels can easily be spotted because of their darkness...
