I"m narrowing down the equipment I want to get and the rod I'm thinking of is the Raven IM8 in 13'. I've never owned a real with sliding rings, what is the advantage to this system?

I recently got that rod in the sliding ring model. I like being able to adjust where my reel is so the rod can balance better. I haven't had my reel fall off yet - the connection seems secure (rings taped). I also think the sliding ring model is cheaper.

Have you used the rod yet? How does it feel? I'm still debating between an Islander Steelhead or the Raven T5 to put on it.

I used the rod today at an east trib, as well as a slightly larger west trib last week. I like how it has a blend of power and softness. It seems like it would be able to handle a wide range of rigs and conditions. I didn't land any fish on it but I have no doubt that it would perform well with a fish. I posted a thread in the 'float fishing' forum a while ago about those 2 reels, there's some good info in there. I ended up putting a lower end Raven on it, but I'm hoping to upgrade in the future.

You will be happy with it. It's a pretty nice reel, especially for the price. I had a clicker issue with mine and they sent me a replacement part for free. It arrived within 4 days and I haven't had a problem since.

Delayed post here but this can help.

The Islanders don't fit the Raven im8 reel seat, and kingpins hardly fit. All the raven reels fit nicely.

There are a few advantages of each. A reel seat looks nicer and is heaver, it helps balance out the rod. However, you are stick with that one positioning where your reel goes, and it is also colder on the hands in the late fall/ winter/ spring time.

Cork (rings) is warmer on the hands. It also allows you the place the reel where ever you like giving you a custom feel. I have fished both and prefer rings. It doesn't look as nice, but ouuus and ahhhhhs of my gear isn't what I am after ;)

its totally personal preference. Raven is a GREAT company and I can't say enough good things about their products and customer service. Let me know if you have any other questions. The im8 is a great rod.

I would only put a reel seat on a custom build in the exact position I like best. im8 is a great rod but the reel seat may not suit your fishing style. as a first rod id go with rings until you find out what reel placement suits you best
