Snagging intentionally...

Ontario Fishing Forums

Help Support Ontario Fishing Forums:

My question is, are Native Canadians legally allowed to intentionally snag, shoot with a bow, or harvest fish by any means, in any location and at any time? I am not meaning to create any controversy, or perhaps condone the intentional snagging of fish as I know as a Canadian citizen who has purchased an Ontario fishing license, that it is illegal and unethical to do so. I just ran into a couple guys who were using other methods than rod and reel fishing. I approached these individuals, in a non-confrontational way and talked to them for several minutes, and they appeared willing to talk. I think it would benefit anglers to know this information, so that they can make a more informed decision as to how and when they approach someone who is intentionally snagging.

I skimmed through this thread and wanted to mention something that's been bugging me quite a bit this year.

Why does the ministry stock Chinook salmon? I should really call them and ask why they would stock a fish that doesn't feed in the rivers, and then have an open season for people to "fish" for such a species in the rivers.... BLOWS MY F'IN MIND

Why instead... maybe they can stop stocking chinook... and wait until the lake is ready for Atlantic salmon.. the true native Ontario salmonid. I mean... cohos at least... as least cohos are nice to look at!

I mean... CHINOOK...really!?!?! Of all the things they could stock... WHY CHINOOK! Why does the ministry want our riverbanks to smell like ROTTEN FLESH for an entire month. Snagged, gutted or just left to be.... ALL OF THEM DIE AND SMELL HORRIBLE. It's disgusting to everyone hiking the trails to smell the dead salmon bodies.

Please... please stop the madness and start stocking something else. I really can't see any logic in stocking chinook.

lol (Dont see any "SNAGGING".... I see FIRST NATIONS PEOPLE CATCHING FISH IN NETS on THEIR LAND for FOOD)

I lived in VANCOUVER for almost 5 years.
Most of it, on the North Shore.

The Capilano comes out Right at Ambleside Park in West Van.

The First Nations OWN that land opposite to the Park (other side of river). And have for Thousand of Years.

The FISH that are being caught are USED for FOOD! and have been for Thousands of Years .... ( REAL NATIVE FISH, not intoduced species lol)

???? I'm not getting the drift of this video and why it is significant to this threads OP....

Should we show some Chicken Farms, Cattle Slaughter houses, Poultry ... Prescription Drug Company's "inside Sales" memos: OWNED by "WHITE MAN"... to appease the masses - us.

Lets have a look at OUR COMMERCIAL FISHERIES shall we...?

Just making a VERY VALID POINT here, not calling you out.

The video DOES NOT go with the post.

* Maybe we could post some video of "WHITE BUCKET FISHERMEN NEXT" lol
Just walk down to BRONTE, CREDIT.... and have a look at what ONTARIANS are doing ever day.

Oh those SLIT BELLY CHINNIES, there because of STEELHEADERS

PERIOD

EVERY FALL IT's the SAME THING on the FORUMS and ON the RIVERS!
Does ANYBODY have some FISH PORN to post.

He was asking if they're allowed to harvest fish by any means, NOT just snagging.. I posted the video because it shows just this. What they're doing in the video is legal, but not ethical in my opinion. It just seems cruel.

As I said, was not calling you out, just sharing some of my experiece out on the WEST COAST where this happens every year.

No worries...

My opinion is they are NOT SPORT FISHING (Never said they were), they are simply HARVESTING FISH during their migration throught the Capilano.

"WE" harvest animals, insects.... freakin plants... EVERYTHING! So what is wrong or inhumane about them catching these fish?

Seriously.

Anyway, my apologies ... I forget to add that we all know the SNAGGING is "JCPT" Fault! (just joking buddy)

Excellent Question Michael! (About the Atlantics)

The "problem" or not much mentioned thing is this:

Firstly, Chinook have been proven to ADAPT WELL ... and also came in at the right price tag. Thats why they were choosen and proven to work.

Alebiet our "opinions" on their looks etc.

As for the Atlantic Salmon: One thing that is NOT TALKED ABOUT OFTEN (and remember, I'm all for the Restocking) is the REAL REASON they became extinct in LAKE ONTARIO.

*Over fished, the dams, the pollution ...... etc (All real things .... however)

There still are PERCH, PIKE , CARP .... Why did not all these fish go extinct like the Atlantic Salmon?
In my opinion, there seems to have been some FATAL FLAW in the genetics of the "ORIGINAL ATLANTIC SALMON"...... Seriously.

It could include MANY FACTORS... but at the end of the day, they DIED OFF while other species contiued to flourish... up to and including INTRODUCED new species.

I do not pretend ot "KNOW" everthing about the new genetic backgrounds of what has been new stocking over the past 6-7 years.
But, "I KNOW".... I have yet to "SEE or CATCH" an ATLANTIC in any of our TRIBS that has been over 1-2 lbs.

A HEATHLY TROUT/ SALMON in Lake Ontario waters.... can gain on AVERAGE that every year!

So why is this happening? It would "Seem" That maybe they have not found the right genetic strain....YET!

Lets hope they do!

The "Original Atlantic Salmon" OF LAKE ONTARIO (Not east coast)..... DIED OFF! Couldnt handle it.

Think about it

lol

ps: Never forget, the most NOBLE and PRIZED fish in all of existence (THE STEELHEAD of ONTARIO) didnt even EXIST when the ATLANTIC SALMON did.... Thanks to it's failure and our introduction of RAINBOW TROUT... we have what we have.

DOESNT mean it cant CHANGE AGAIN!

*SMILES*

Just because something isn't illegal doesn't mean it's right. For example, flossing here is legal, but is it right? Is netting that many salmon right?

OMG.... come on.
How "MANY" salmon did they catch.....

Seriously man i didnt think this site has turned into the BIGGEST PETA FEAST in the world! (No offence meant).

They are catching fish for FOOD!

OMG.... how do you think WE EAT? SERIOUSLY....... Holy cow man, has EVERYONE put the BLINDERS ON as to WHERE and HOW we get our FOOD?

Seriously.

You know, I will just stay out of these conversations.

The HYPOCRACY and RELEVANCE .... I dont know "Misdirected" outlooks at our "WOES of the WORLD"..... (Some Natives Catching fish for food)

WAKE UP.... *SMILES* and BREATH some of the REAL WORLD.
Look in our MODERN SOCIETY MIRROR..

SERIOUSLY

Maybe we should try and upload a video of someone "Trying to Fish in Syria" right now *SMILES* That would be funny

ps: I forgot this was a FISHING FORUM! My bad

Just to clarify,

Chinooks DO hit in the rivers, VORACIOUSLY.

Ask me, Notta, Float Down, and many other guys on this forum.

I'm going to put up a report in a minute..salmon were SMASHING spinners today, WAY upstream. They weren't even protecting redds. How do I know? Because I landed a female with skein still in her.. she hadn't laid a single egg yet and she attacked my spinner.

Not meaning to sound like an ass with the caps lock, just want to clear up some common misconceptions, such as that "salmon have to be flossed once in the rivers."

I do agree that cohos seem to be preferred over chinooks by virtually all Ontario anglers, for fight, appearance, and I even hear they taste better than chinooks.

Cohos are no longer stocked by the MNR, but private organizations with permits do stock them, mostly in the Credit I hear. Other tribs have a naturally reproducing population, so please release them with care. Lots of chinooks naturally reproduce too.

In the 1840's it was recorded that over 300,000 Atlantic salmon were netted around the mouth of the Credit River in one season. Add every trout and salmon that runs the credit today and it doesn’t even amount to half of that. Was it really a genetic flaw that led to their extinction?

Yeah i saw a guy on Sunday use spinners, friggin owning the pools... Which reminds me, I need to stock those in my pouch.

I think that is the "Key Factor" ... is Genetics = ALONG with many others: As you have stated or aluded to correctly.

In nature there are Dominite Factors and then then are also many Variables.

Out side of the "Glass Test Tube (Control) the real worlds throws everything at you.

Disease, Natural Disaster, Climate Change, Polloution, Over havesting...)

So.... Ithink that whatever "Strain of Atlantic Salmon from the Past .... couldnt even survive in Small Numbers .... HAD BAD GENETICS.

And ... The new introductions may need some adjustments in Both Genetics and or (Regulations, Enviromental Controls, ....)

So far...... No one has ever shown me a Pic (You Know... YOURSELF - ANY and ALL of US) with a more than 2lb Atlantic Salmon from a Trib. DIDNT HAPPEN! lol

Thanks for the Conversation, it is a pleasure to Talk about fish

Seriously

What are you trying to say, really? lol You call out CJR and then say, you were not calling him out. And then you insult this site as being a PETA Feast and then say, "No offense meant"

Blair, WTF are you trying to say???

I mean, how can you say something rude/offensive and not mean it afterwards? Do I call you a loogan and then say, "no offense meant"? lol

I'm glad ... that you are glad.

iI did not "attack" CJR (Why would I? ... enjoyable contributor) I was talking about the video.

Why is EVERYTHING so NEGETIVE?

I just finished a post with Rainbow - about Atlantics and such ....

I also left a comment after Notta ...

There should be lots to Jomp aboard on.... CHOO CHOO... I kknow I can, I know I can ..... CHOO CHOO

Peter Cried Wolf .... Great Story.

Good Night and Good Luck with everthing you got going on!
Tomorrow is cool with Sunshine

Yeah i saw a guy on Sunday use spinners, friggin owning the pools... Which reminds me, I need to stock those in my pouch.

Spinners with treble hooks or single hooks? I hope single hooks... I'm having a hard time imaging this working and getting fish in the mouth... I'd just expect the trebles to catch in fins and wherever else they brush up against the salmon. This would happen before the salmon would get angry enough to chase the spinner... that's what I'd expect to happen at least.

I've never heard of people fishing salmon with spinners before. If I'd have seen it I would have thought it as snagging. I really have a lot to learn...

Blair. I found a dead 4 pound male Atlantic on the credit today. It's still there if you wanna go see

It's a ahame to see one dead. (Was it Snagged?)

Makes the News of a fish ...less Exciting.

lol

*Great to hear of one ... Sad to know how.
