To name a few, segregation on reserves and in the educational system, lack of funding for social issues on these reserves, sterilization etc. I find it upseting to see such a vulnerable population not get the resources they require from our government. Yes but these historical events were generations ago. Nobody is pushing them aside. They can buy land, use infrastructure paid for by taxpayers, use the education system, and basically do anything the same way any non-native person does. We are all equal and our opportunities should be equal too. We don't treat an immigrant who just got their citizenship yesterday different so I can't understand why this situation is different so long after the colonization took place.

I agree that "MOVING FORWARD" is the solution.
However, History has many occurances.....

When one wears another's shoes ... it can be a totally different experience



Historical Recognition Program
On June 22, 2006, the Government of Canada, announced the Community Historical Recognition Program and the National Historical Recognition Program to commemorate and educate Canadians about the historical experiences and contributions of ethno-cultural communities affected by wartime measures and immigration restrictions that were applied in Canada.

Prior to that announcement, Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued an official apology for the Head Tax imposed on Chinese immigrants. The Government also announced that it would make ex-gratia symbolic payments of $20,000 to living Head Tax payers and to persons who were in a conjugal relationship with a now-deceased Head Tax payer.

Together, these programs provide a comprehensive approach to historical recognition.

 
I am tired of hearing everyone complain about the lack of CO's ..they are the ministry of natural resources not the ministry of the salmon and steelhead runs...they have OTHER obligations to attend to and quite honestly , more important obligations...do you think they would have the majority of their already short staff monitoring the river banks for snaggers and non-licensed anglers OR would they have them monitoring people wandering the woods and fields with loaded weapons capable of killing a people...imo their priorities are right, I am much more concerned of a non licensed hunter without a PAL walking around the forest firing in every direction and shooting at anything that moves, than a deadbeat snagger taking an old boot...its unfortuante that the two seasons clash but it is what it is and I think we should be grateful for the enforcement that you do see on the river.

The police marine unit was down at Bronte last week checking licences and handing out tickets. Was nice to see. Aside from ice fishing that was the first time I have ever been aked to see my fishing license shore fishing. A couple guys got nailed down there with no license and salmon in their posession

First.. this is a fishing forum.. I would imagine the hunters have their own complaints.. but because this is a fishing forum, we don't hear about it..
That said.. You do realize that most of these clowns on the river, are the same jackasses who are hunting illegally?
At least that has been my experience..
 
I would hire juniors or maybe take Co-op students to check the river during this time - of course with a senior supervising and handing out the fines. I'm not sure if it's possible/feasible, but it's an idea.

On that note, anyone ever consider organizing a huge clean up, some place that needs it, and milking the high school mandatory volunteer hours for all they're worth?

There's a few high school students on this forum, we could tell them to recruit from their schools.

Just need to find a place that really needs a clean up, then it's just a matter of organizing it which shouldn't be too difficult.

I haven't been to Wilmot in ages, and usually around this time somebody does a big clean up after the goon squad has dissipated. But I'm sure Wilmot isn't the only place that gets filthy.

Sadly, that likely won't happen. Schools won't cover the liability. Working on a river probably makes their legal department cringe.

Now if one of the regional conservation management organizations wants to assume the liability, maybe possible.

Could you imagine a co op student trying to ticket somebody on a remote section of water. I think they would be in way over there head with the nut cases out there

They would need to at least be co-students in police academy or something....

I've never done it, but writing tickets to people with guns doesn't seem like a summer job type deal...

And the Salmon run is in September when everyone is back in school. IF anything, the MNR can have volunteers using their eyes and reporting what they see. But the new system would involve them actually following-up with reports...

You could get students to pick up and throw away garbage and other junk, but I don't think they'd be able to hand out tickets.

Just an idea.
 
inflate fines to an astronomical number and it will tin out the herd of risk takers and idiots...
 
Saw a guy getting a ticket for no license , too many fish , and intentionally snaggin ( that I could see ) all these offenses...ticket was 256$..what an absolute joke..if someone harvests a bunch of salmon and sells the eggs they will make that and then some..we start seeing fines in the thousands...then will see less poachers and snaggers.

Not really, other rivers have more fish. Bronte is just snaggers paradise with the low and clear water.
