I was wondering who will be out on Lake Ontario this week Piking? Season opener is this Saturday...

hope to go piking at the Toronto Islands...
looks like Sunday would be a better choice as Saturday is due for some rain

I may try promenade park in Mississauga maybe on Sunday as Saturday does not look too promising weather wise.

I'm in sudbury in my fishing zone (10) pike is open all year. I was out yesterday for a couple hours had some work to do around camp got the boat out and in the water so i went and pitched a few in. Crazy cold front after having 20 degree weather last week the fish weren't too excited to bite it was actually snowing at one point!

But overall who can complain about fishing!

A bad day on the water is better than a good day anywhere else!

I'll be finally picking up my boat on Saturday, will try to go to Island lake in orangeville(closest lake to me) and try there, either Sat or Sun or both:)

hey isn't pike season opens 2nd sat of may.let me know.thx

According to the regs it is May 3rd for Lake Ontario as per the information in the regs booklet I picked up.

Lake Ontario is zone 20 first Saturday in may is pike opener

Maybe it will be slow but this is Northern Pike after all they are a fish that are used to these conditions. Although they do like to sun themselves and regenerate their strength after the spawning season.

with these chilly conditions we've been experiencing, the opener will be slow at best.

I've caught pike before in 5c weather, in the begining of Nov on top water lures before, so there still a very good chance to catch some this time of year.

spring and fall are two separate seasons. in the fall, the dropping temps will STIMULATE them to feed aggressively to pack on weight and fat for the winter season.
in the spring, they rely on the warmer temperatures to raise their metabolism so they can use that energy to feed. with the cold fronts, they tend to be in lock-jaw mode most of the time with most of them being caught in a short time frame when the sun is at its highest point.

No doubt you can catch them this time of year, they are easily caught this time of year, but these past few days have been pretty cold especially after a heat wave last couple weeks.
These are ectothermic animals, and temperature plays a huge role in their behaviour.

prolly check out the bluffs, i remember the bruisers we used to haul out of the boat docks.

Those were the good days. Bluffs used to be awesome for everything from Salmon to PIke to Browns. Haven't caught much of anything out of their these last few years though. I might go down on Sunday for some Carp though if it's a nice day.

hahah i live right up top of the bluffs and i fish there alot.
i know what you mean by the old days but you can still
get a good days fishin done there. i do have to admit that
the salmon run suck now, but who cares half the people there were snaggers anyway.
maybe ill see you down there sometime.
