So i have been looking around at some fly rod and reels, My first ever ( i am a noob fly guy ). So i decided on the Orvis Clearwater rod 6 weight and 9 foot, plus the clearwater reel. Let me know if this is a good setup for a noob like myself. I recently won some money at a archery shoot, and been itching to get some fly gear.

I will be going to buy my stuuf this weekend. Also recommend my some good line looking to spen 75-80..00 for the line.

Cheers

awesome bro--had them both--some extremely seasoned fly guys in here still have the Clearwater as their "go to" rod..and the drag on the reel is awesome. great starter--to experienced setup IMO

that same person uses a 6 for steel as well...you good man see you at the outing!

It's a good setup congrats on your first setup but for line I would recommend the rio gold fly line or the rio outbound

I use Rio grand on my 5wt rod and Rio indicator line for my 7wt. This is the first season using the indicator line and I really like it. The orange section on the white fly line really helps you see the strikes. Congrats on your first setup.

Thanks guys, I will take at look at the RIO line, Maybe a silly question but was is the deal on the line colours? Is there a preferable one? Is it dictated by the waters that i will fish ? Also is it worth while to get a extra spool ?

Also what are some must have's to start up? Leaders etc...etc...

Sorry for so many questions but want to be sure i get all the right stuff and all the gear required to get me out on the water.

Thanks

I can answer what I found as must haves seeing I just went through it back in the spring.

Tippet 3x, 4x, 5x and 6x now that we are coming into Steelhead season I may be told by my guides that I should be adding 1x, and 2x as well.
Leaders. I would have a few tapered leaders in different sizes
Nippers
Good waterproof Fly box/s. Did not think this that important until my last outing where I stepped into a hole in the water that had my sling pack half in the water.
Flies. Lots of Flies. Maybe not Remy/Chaka khan numbers but I would try get a variety of flies in different sizes and a few of each. Nothing worse than finding the fish hitting a white caddis only to lose it up in an osprey nest and it is your only one.
Pack/Vest of some sort. Really your preference but since adding the sling pack I am not sure how I survived without it.

EDIT: Oh and anything with a Simms Logo on it just to make Chaka and Madriver Happy

Cheers for that.

I would recommend Tom Rosenbauer's book about tippets and leaders, it explains a lot i.e. what size leader in relation to fly size; tippet to leader; modifying your leaders;knots.I It seems like a lot to take in at first, like archery, sight points ;nocks ;poundage. Congrats on the win, my daughter took first at provincials recurve. Also what wasaga said, tippets 0-6 , maybe some strike indicators, good fly boxes, I lost one last year when I almost when swimming and lotsa flies. A staff might be good if you plan on wading new turf oh and wear a hat and glasses, you never know if one gets away on you  unless your into piercings

I usually go sage or other muted colour...then I take a magic marker and scribble over the line so it tends to blend better with the surroundings...just me
Think you've made a good choice on your first setup...enjoy!

I recommend getting a spare spool, even if you don't use it right now. In a couple of years you may want a sink tip line or a sinking line if you fish a lot of pond or lakes. Or you may want to use a 7wt line if you are sure to be using only short casts for the day - or it is very windy. Sometimes it is hard to get a spare spool later on, get it now.

I second the part about the indicator line. Picked it up for my 4wt, and absolutely love the orange tip!

In my opinion you cannot go wrong with Orvis - congrats!

Thanks everyone, could some one please tell the name of "fly" company that I can order flies from. I believe they are in Ontario, and If I recall Remy has mentioned there name a few times .
