Hey there,

I'm a 31 year old guy from the UK, and I'm coming over to Toronto for the first time on the 15th of October. I'm really looking to catch some Fly Fishing while I'm over if possible, maybe some bass fishing if I can't catch that? This is the first place I've done any reading up, but anywhere where I can catch a few hours fishing, the dream would be for Salmon (but obviously trout too), would be amazing.

Paying for a guide for a few hours is an option, but just tagging along with someone, maybe just seeing them catch for a while is also the kind of thing I'd be into as well.

Any tips, advice, or offers gratefull received

Craig

Hi Craig,

Two sets of bad news. 1) Fishing for resident trout has closed since Sept 30 and 2) most of the Chinook Salmon run would be over by Oct 15.

Two sets of good news. 1) Fishing for migratory Rainbow Trout (Steelhead) and migratory Brown Trout should be underway and 2) Coho Salmon should still be around.

Yes, you can also fish for Largemouth or Smallmouth Bass, and don't forget Northern Pike or Musky as fly fishing targets.

Unfortunately, I mostly only fish for resident trout on the fly, so my experience with the other species is very limited. I'm sure other members can chime in to help.

Welcome to Toronto.

Ken,

Many thanks for your reply. That's great news about the other fish. Any tips on who might be able to put me on the fish? I'm staying in Downtown Toronto but I have hired a car for such an event. I'd also need to hire or borrow gear. It's a once in a lifetime holiday for me so to even get a chance would be fantastic for me, it's been a lifetime dream.

Thanks again

I am not aware of any fly fishing tackle rental in Toronto. If you don't plan to bring your own gear, it may be a better option to find a local guide so you can have the best fishing information, location and gear for the best chance for success.

Since I don't fly fish for bass, pike or musky, the locations I fish may not be best for you. Many of the areas I fish don't have much room for back casts.

I can recommend creeks and rivers east of Toronto for Coho Salmon, Steelhead and Brown Trout though (larger creeks from Pickering to Port Hope...creeks that starts with the letters, D, O, B...etc). Woolly Bugger, Yarn fly, nymphs such as Copper John, stonefly, Prince nymph...etc from #14 to #8 and streamer patterns will work for these salmonids. The creeks are small so floating line is all you need.
