The member who is declared the winner of the Spring 2008 Top Reporter competition will win a Shimano Curado Baitcasting Reel AND a Baitcasting Rod!(model of rod to be announced)

image.php

RULES:

All reports must be current. Reports must be from fishing trips taken between April 1st 2008 and May 31st 2008.

All reports must be submitted by May 31st 2008.

Reports must be authentic, and any user who is found to post a fraudulent report will forfeit his previous report scores and will be permanently banned from OFF.

To see what qualifies as a first report, see this example http://www.ontariofishingforums.com...ead-report-example-of-an-off-report-t420.html.

The winner will be determined as follows:
Each fishing report submitted by a member will be rated for quality. A score will be assigned to each report that reflects the quality of the report. The highest possible score for a report is 10 points and the lowest is 1 point.
At the end of the month, the "points" for all of each member's reports will be added together for a final point total for the month for each member.
The member with the most points for the month will be declared the "Reporter of the Month".

For example:

Member "A" submits 4 reports for the month that scored 8, 6, 7 and 5 points. Member A's point total for the month will be 26. (8+6+7+5)

Member "B" submits 3 reports for the month that scored 9, 10 and 8 points. Member B's point total for the month will be 27. (9+10+:?:

If these two members were the only two members who submitted fishing reports for the month, Member B would win the monthly competition with 27 points

Reports are rated by and at the discretion of OFF staff.

It is the responsibility of the Spring 2008 Top Reporter winner to provide the site administrator “openfire” a valid mailing address via private message within 7 days of winning the competition or the prize will be forfeited.

Good luck!

That is too good of a prize! You could have settle with cheaper yet high quality like Quantum Energy PT.

Will the winner get a choice of either right or left crank ?

Well... since so many people have already done reports... and I have yet to? even fish... :)

O well... Not only do I wish luck to all but I really do hope to see some quality reports from not so obvious body of water.

man that is a SICKKKKK prize hopefully i can make it out and catch some fish then make a report then win lol. honestly though that is crazy thanx a lot openfire.

Openfire - the sample report you gave, how would you rate it. What determines a 10 pointer rather than a 6 pointer?

The sample river report is a guideline as to how to post your first report to gain access to the reports sections.

It's not bad, but not spectacular either. It does however follow the format that we expect in a report. ie, maps, pics, techniques, etc...

As for points? Well, there will be 5 different judges assigning scores to the reports, so it's up to each judge to determine what criteria he will use when grading a report.

I would say that as a rule of thumb, the more pics and more details you include in your reports, the higher the score will be.

To answer your question, if someone else had posted the sample report you're referring to, I would give it a 9/10. But that's me. I'm generous!

I would say that as a rule of thumb, the more pics and more details you include in your reports, the higher the score will be.

It would depend on the quality of the picture too (quality as in content wise, not artistic wise).

As for the format of the report... you don't really have to follow that example but do it which ever way you want. Just make sure to add enough details for someone new to be able to understand how and what you have done to fish that water.

I have some questions about this, i.e. about reports in general.

1. So what should be considered as a fishing report?

To explain - What I am asking is, say I go fishing to Bomanville on May 1, 10, 15, 25 .. ,
so I can take photos, explain what I was fishing for etc. , and post it as a fishing report. But is this really to be considered as new report ? Is this type of reports going to be considered for Spring 2008 Top Reporter Competition!" This does give us info on how was the fishing at certain location at certain time, but - it is not a new info about new location

2. On the other hand, if we are to consider as a fishing report, i.e. fishing report to be considered for "Spring 2008 Top Reporter Competition!" ,if we go with only new reports about new, undiscovered locations, or locations that nobody else reported about before, then we are up against different problem - as there is only so many fishing locations that we can visit

3. An what about if one goes to a new location, previously not reported by anyone, but end up not catching anything (skunk reporting), is this to be considered as fishing report for "Spring 2008 Top Reporter Competition!"

I think some clarification would be helpful, perhaps administrator or moderators can shed some light on this ?

Finally, thank you for taking time to think about those issues.
It is being talked about under "Forum Changes" sub forum.
We would appreciate it if you could share your ideas here on how these not so new area reports should be treated.
One of the thing I said was to treat it as a Update Report. At same time it will be new for some people.

Than again, I think the prize is OVERKILL too ! atleast for now.

I searched and could not find where is "Forum Changes" sub forum. Perhaps someone can post link here.

As far as my question goes, I really think that administrator or moderators should speak up on this issue.

i spoke briefly with frozenfire about this before too

some people will have more opportunities to fish than others. i.e. someone who works 9-5 will not have as much time to fish as someone who works 20 hours a week. i.e. someone who has children will not have as much time as a single student who lives with their family.

some people do not have as much access to transportation to fishing areas. i.e. anywhere downtown toronto is easily accessible through public transportation (the TTC) but one's access to even the TTC could be limited by where they live. the GTA is only one of many sections where reports can be made. the divisions between these sections is based on location. all of the other locations require the usage of an automobile unless the members live in proximity of those areas. even so, i think (not entirely sure) if they were to look for another spot within the area, it would require a vehicle (land or water).

newer and less avid fishermen may only be familiar with few spots.

the addition of photos to a report can enhance the rating it receives. i think they are required for validation of a new/recent report? not everyone may have access to a digital camera or a cell phone with a camera. these seem to be the key devices for the reports as there is a time frame within when these reports must be posted by. i.e. if one were to use a 35mm camera, although it is a camera and can prove authenticity, they would need to develop the film, scan the image/upload the image if they purchased a cd of photos, and post it before the deadline.

the quality of a report is also reflected on the description one provides. we are using english as the default language of communication on this forum, and one whose first language is not english may not be able to articulate their report in the same way. by this i'm not talking about spelling errors, grammar, or writing intellectually, but focusing on how one may not be able to express or speak of certain aspects of their trip through their limited command of the english language.

there are a lot of issues when it comes to choosing a winner. having a panel of judges is a great idea to combat the bias that could be present if there was only one judge. i saw a comment/note of advice where one member (i think mikeymikey?) said to write the reports so that they can be understood by all - the expert, the novice, the interested. i think it would be an interesting idea to bring in another judge, someone who has no knowledge of fishing to rate them as well. however this would then create even further problems. who would this person be? how would you find them? if they have no interest in fishing at all, they might skim quickly and spit out a quick response instead of a detailed rating.

would it be more equitable to perform a draw? of all members who have posted a report, for their names to be written once and placed in a hat, and one would be selected and become the winner?

if there is no incentive, will members of the board continue to post reports as often as they do? would they go to fish as often as they do?

too many questions! answers? *head desk haha

what you said kind of fits my profile, i'm not even going to get a chance to make a report anytime soon >.

so when we gonna ahve a winnenamedÉÉ lol, i;m curious to know, thats an amazing prize!

The winner will be declared soon. The panel of judges are still finalizing the new scoring scheme. I think we have a winner but I'm still waiting for the panel to get things finalized. Either way, I will announce a winner at some point during the week.
