I'm gonna be doing a lot of Trout fishing in Markham at some rivers I know when trout opens. I am very new to fly fishing so I want to gather as much info as I can before I head out. I have casting, line, leaders and all that stuff down but I'm still a complete noob when it comes to flies.

I'll be fishing for Rainbows, Browns, and Brooks all around 5-20 inches and was wondering if there are any go to flies for this type of situation and also are there any hatches during the spring in Markham.

I have a decent amount of flies in my fly box but aside from my larger Bass and Pike ones, I have no clue what they are really for.

Pretty much what I'm asking is what are they best go to flies for my situation.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

For the opener, you should have a selection of the usual suspects like pheasant tails, hares ear, squirrels, princes, copper johns and so on but also some big stuff like hellgrammites, san juan worms and buggers. Big streamers will also do the trick. Remember that in many cases, feeding up to this period has been slow, insect activity has been slow so the trout are looking forward to just about anything. Matching the hatch will become more important by mid May.

I've seen some small black stoneflies or snowflies so far. Too bad someone hasn't come up with streamside delivery service, kinda like the coffee truck. Roe bags for floaters and flies for fly guys. i need to learn to tie, I lose a couple every time out. Sorry off topic

Let me know how it goes if you get out before me. What flies are you using?
