Went to Rice yesterday to fish from shore and it was just starting to rain. Thought it might just bring in the walleyes. I was wrong, first spot near Roseneath only 1 small perch, was there for 1 1/2 hours. The fish seemed to shut down at that location. Second spot Hastings, another 1 1/2 hour, used grub with worm not even a nibble. Third, Campbellford, same thing, but stopped raining. Gave it about 1 hour. Last was upper Trent River, by then discouraged and felt that rain (which started up again) shut all the fish down. Stayed there for 45 min.

My thinking is as if I was in a boat, if fish are not active in one location maybe they would be in another. I don't like to stay in one place waiting and waiting when no fish are even nibbling.

What do you do stay and tough it out, for how long do you give a spot? Or do you go and find more/any productive areas like you were in a bass boat......lol....?

Thanks for your valued opinions.

Good and better fishing to all.

I have my spots marked with waypoints on my Fishfinder/chartplotter but I know where they are in my head so if I am in someone elses boat, I can still get to those spots. I usually stay at a spot for 30 min to an hour. If the fish are there and not biting its time to move on. I will try a few different things before moving on though. If plastics are not working then I try crankbaits or spinners and if I can't get a strike or bite then I go to a different spot.

This past summer was great because each spot of mine produced all season so if one wasn't working another one was. The key is to have these go to spots that produce year after year.

If you are on shore you pretty much have to stick it out unless you have other spots that are within walking or driving distance. Fortunately at Rice Lake there a bunch of spots around the area you were fishing that can be driven to within 30 minutes or less.

how deep was the water you were fishing? ppl say fish move shallow in fall but i always look for good sharp breaks ie) points extending into the basin, river mouths ect shallow water is no good until the lake turns over even then deeper is better

The first spot was shallow with a deep dropoff. How far I was not sure, all I felt were weeds when I cast out. On the second spot, Hastings, with the little rain increased the flow past the dam or they may have opened it up, it was flowing very fast. I tried casting out in the middle with big sinkers but the current still took my bait down river and eventually brought my lure to the surface. When I cast into the slower water, still no action. In Campbellford the river was slow moving, I was right on the bottom same with the upper Trent River. One of the things I can see that I did'nt do was float a worm in the slower current areas.

Thanks for the help guys.
