Steelhead Flies at Trout Opener

Hey Guys:

I'm brand new to fly fishing, and just wondering what seem to be effective flies right around opener in mid-sized tribs? Roe and worms seem to do well in the spring with a float....so for a fly setup, are yarn flies and "San Juan Worms" typically the way to go? Or are there some nymphs, etc. that would be more effective this time of year?

hares ears, pheasant tails egg flies, san juans will all work well

I used to always say stoneflies, hares ears, globugs ect.... but Ive learned that on opener/around opener when the fish are seeing a lot more mediocre presentations it is best to go with something slightly different. Ive started tying a lot of classic bugs with slight variations (blaze orange legs, pink beads, examples...)

As for glo bugs I like to pretend like I care about the shape colour and whatever else other glo bug fisherman care about but I honestly dont care... More often then not I just have some globug yarn on me (for indicators) which I will tie onto my hook as need (west coast style \X/ )

oh and san juans, my personal opinion... hate them... dont know why... but I do... one piece of chenille 3 wraps of thread and some glue. yeehaw spacecowboy

The Yetifish stonefly is all I fish

Stonefly ive had most luck on but as said above anything should work well.

What sizes do you typically use?

Size 8 stones is just what I fish, even in clear water, but a 10 may be worth a shot too.

Egg sucking leeches and wooly buggers. Sizes 6 to 12. You can dead drift them, swing them, twitch them. They just plain work for me. Easy to tie and easy to fish. I tie them with eyes, rubber legs, rabbit strip tails, marabou, schlapen.... I love the style. And always some small size 12 and 14 single egg flies. When the presure is on, fishing the small micro eggs can work magic. I cant wait to start the swing game.......

What colour patterns?

Hard to nail down specific color paterns. When I sit down to tie anything goes as far as colors. Usually the normal steelhead colors. Pink, orange, green, yellow head with black, white, purple, olive, green bodies. White body with black schlapen hackle and pink marabou tale was a good one for me last spring. I just go ahead and mix and match whatever. Im not really much of a perfectionist when it comes time to tieing.
