Hi all,I am new to this forum and love all the "education" I'm getting. I used to fish for bass and panfish and the odd pike, catfish and carp. But things got busy and I haven't dipped a line in a few years. I have just been introduced to fly fishing and attended the Spey Clave in Paris and now I am "hooked" so to speak on fly fishing. I have never caught any trout sad to say and would like any tips or locales. I live in the Durham area. Also, I know it sounds stupid but could someone tell me the difference between a steelhead and a salmon? I was taking a stroll the other day on the Lake Ontario shore around Courtice and saw this washed up on shore. Any ideas?View attachment 10350

Welcome to the forum. It looks like the remains of a male chinook salmon. For an excellent pictorial of salmon and trout check out this link.

It's always better to know what you catch, each fish has different possession limits.

Good luck with your trout persuit.

Hey,

Welcome to the site. A steelhead is a rainbow trout that lives in a lake or a sea but migrates into rivers to spawn.

A salmon is a big ass fish, that will snap your rod and drag you in and put a curse on your soul... ;)

Just kidding, a salmon is a type of fish, they live in a lake or a sea and migrate into fresh water to spawn, once they spawn they die. There are many different types of salmon, but the most common in Ontario are, Coho Salmon and Chinook Salmon.

Cheers.
