Its looking like I might go icefishing on Tuesday next week, kinda curious, if any other OFFers have gone to simcoe lately or are planning to before the iceout comes mid March. We will be targeting perch, but have lake trout/whitefish as a secondary option depending on which operators have huts available.

i went on sunday, comming from skiing trip, but was there in the afternoon so didnt feel like staying after 2 hours of no fish, talked to some guys, but they said the same, slow day. couple of local guys with underwater camera said they saw lots of pike cruising around.

i just got back from callander ontario, i rented i ice hut off them for the weekend, i droped the aquaview and it look like a dessert. no weeds or rocks. i ended up with a few perch, nothing really what i was looking for. i dunno if it good to hit it early icefishin or late in the year

Hey Esox, mind a few questions?

My friends and I are heading up that way this weekend;
Who did you rent the hut off of?
Did you only view the bottom from the hut or did you go out and cut other holes?
Any particular bait/method or time work well for the perch?
Did you try anything for Pike/Walleye, any results? (sandy flats sound perfect for walleye).

Any other advice?
Cheers
Shaun.

For anyone who is planning on getting in some ice fishing on Simcoe before the season ends, I have a hot spot for you. At the end of Old Homestead Rd in Keswick at Lake Drive N there is a utility building right on the shore, you can enter the lake here. Legal parking is available on 1st Ave, just up the street. Head straight out from this point, follow the track out about 100 meters, you'll see several holes in this area. Use 2"-3" minnows, you'll have non-stop action all day. My friend and I caught well over 100 hundred Perch in 5 hours. I wouldn't recommend Harry's Bait & Tackle in Keswick for minnows though, bit of an a**hole. Captain Morbid's on Hwy 48 north of Ravenshoe Rd is a better bet. Pat's Place in Keswick is a good bet for breakfast though, cheap and it's one of the only places open at 7:00am. Tight lines!!
