Went out to a lake O trib on Friday expecting to have a very slow day and maybe be lucky enough to catch one maybe two fish. It turns out the rain we had last week brought in a fresh run of fish! I ended up hooking into one fresh male on a worm as well as 2 drop backs that had their chrome coat back. The guy across the river from me close to the end of the day lost two very fresh fish on a fly rod! The one I caught made well over 10 - 4' vertical leaps out of the water directly infront of me, at one point it almost killed itself jumping 4' out of the water and just narrowly missing the concrete footing for the bridge on its way down! I was hooting and hollering all over the place lol.

I ended up going 3/7 or maybe even 3/9 for the day. It was funny because at the beginning of the day I kept on missing fish after fish within 2 or 3 seconds of the hookset, the guy across the river at that point was laughing at me saying "you sure all of those missed 'steelheads' arent really missed suckers" but I was sure they were steelhead as I caught slight glimpses of them as they rolled towards the surface right after the hookset. I must have lost 3 or 4 fish in a 15 minute period at one point, I have never been so upset with myself on the river lol. It wasnt until after that guy left that I started actually landing fish so I hope he stumbles on this thread lol.

Anyways here are some pics of the three that didnt get away. As long as it doesnt rain too much there should still be some action on certain tribs. Next big rain most will probably be back in the lake.

I knew they are still in some tribs!! Congrats man!!
My buddy even told me he caught tons last two weekends..
Thanks for the report and pics

I was just pouring sweat in my neoprene waders, my breathables have a leak but I am definitely wearing them over the neoprene's if I do any more wading

Nice catches!

There definately are still BOWS hanging in the Tribs!

Was at an EAST TRIB just last week .... and still saw lots of them hanging around.

Kinda like the Salmon runs .... there is always a group of "LATE ARRIVALS" (Or ... "Just dont want to go home ones)

Thanks for the Pics and Update.

Nice going NADO !! Glad to see you haven"t given up yet . I know there are still loads of fish swimming around in certain rivers that's for sure .
This past Sunday I was 8 for 14 steelies and 1 Smallie . The hits kept going right through the day , if i counted in the amount of hits missed , man it would be in the mid twenties . Today I landed a nice male about 3 lbs. on the first drift , then my fishing companion who likes using mepps spinners , accidentaly snags a 5 foot long sturgeon in the tail . After several attempts to break it off failed , we followed the fish around up the river and back down the river and finally got the opportunity to reach down and pop off the lure . Crazy thing was after the hour long chase , we took a break went back up river to the hole we were fishing , first drift I hooked and lost a nice big steelie and my buddy yells out " oh no .... I think I got another Sturgeon on " !!!! Yes indeed he did have another bigger than the one before sturgeon on and luckily for us this fish stayed in the pool and drifted down to the tail out , where the lure was quickly removed without the sturgeon moving an inch . Interesting enough the last one had a flurry of baby lamprey eels attached to the back close to the dorsal fin , about 6 of 'em .
I did a video of the sturgeon , we'll see if I can post it soon . The other sturgeon in the pool were breaching , always after the camera was put away ....lol.

Wow what a surprise that must of been. Crazy

I'm not suprised to hear there are fish in some tribs, though todays rain could drive most of them back to the lake, well see.

I was fishing for them right up until last friday night too, went 7 or 8 for 9 fishing for about 3.5 hours, lost count.... it was a surprising blast. One guy fishing with me got a 31" thick bodied hen that must have been 13-15 lbs after i shared the magic bait with him :D

Notta, so there are that many sturgeon in the river or was it just a fluke? I'd love to hook into one, one day.

WOW is all I have to say....

Nice action and fish man .In a small western trib I was hooking up to very healthy fish as well.Landed a nice 7lb drop back hen on my 4 wt. .fly rod in some fast water??!!.Other hook ups didn't fair as well as some timber got in my way still fish around but spooky and search and conquer methods.

No fluke , May is the month for sturgeon , we figured in that one hole there were about eight - 4 to 5 footers . The best place to see them is at Nicholston dam at hwy # 89 just outside Alliston . The dam is as far as they can go . So below the dam there will be quite a few for sure . The water is really getting clear and they hate to be exposed , so they will soon head for deeper runs in the river .
A heavy rain that rises the height of the river will then take them back out to the lake and that's a 72 km. hike for these fish usually by the end of the month . They will take their time slowly moving back and feeding , they are never in a hurry . The fish my buddy had on really didn't react to being hooked , they just slowly swam along , but at probably 100 pounds of body weight , it dosen't take much to peel the line off any reel .

100 lbs  *we'll need a bigger boat* errr rod and reel :D

Just checked the regs and my hunch was right, closed all year. Guess I will be bringing a DSLR with a polarized filter to catch some pictures when I manage to get up there sometime. Are there enough visible fish (given the right conditions) to make it a worthwhile spotting trip?

Best advice I can give you is , come for bows and or suckers ( we grow them big ) and maybe you`ll see a sturgeon or hook one by accident .
The area at the dam is a trailer park - camp ground , so you can stay for the weekend . The dam to the mouth of the Boyne river area is open for fishing the second weekend in May.
