A Splake is a rare hybrid of the Brook Trout and the Lake Trout. The Splake has a flat tail and red fins with a prominent white stripe on the fins like a Brook Trout but has the head and skin markings, which are similar to a Lake Trout. The Splake also has white gums like a Lake Trout while Brook Trout usually have black gums like a salmon. Splake get big like a Lake Trout but their meat is red and lean and tastes more like a Brook Trout. Splake is considered to be right up their with Brook Trout as the best tasting trout in the world.

* many call this a DISASTER

many say it was a success

Some do not know or care lol

I hope the ATLANTIC PROGRAM has more "success" than the Splake!

In the meantime:

They seem to have the CHINNIES, COHO, RAINBOWS and BROWNS going pretty good.

So... if they decided to DOUBLE these efforts, I would not complain

Thanks Fishing Noob,CJR,RiverNinja & Blair these splake were raised in the Dorion Fish Hatchery just to the east of Thunder Bay..... I've been spotting wolves off hwy#527 just to the north & south of Chimney Lake there must be a den in one of the caves near by....Last year I came face to face with one while fishing a stocked lake in the Dorion area up Ouimet Canyon Road their numbers seem to be on the rise again...I think the Nipigon Escarpment provides lots of good den sites for wolves.

Thanks for posting all the info! Are Splake able to spawn? Will Lake Trout and Brook Trout spawn naturally? Thanks.

From what I understand Splake cannot spawn at all and Brook Trout and Lake Trout do not spawn naturally FishingNoob...I'll have to make a trip out to the Dorion Fish Hatchery one day and bring the camera. :)
