Success at Lake Nipissing

Well, it was a trip to remember. Had my three long time buddies join me for the Walleye opener at Calandar Bay, Lake Nipissing and we were not to be dissapointed. Will try my first report when all the pics are in and I have more time. . Most walleye were either at the legal slot limit or larger and were thrown back. First night four of us nailed our limit... ie. breakfast and dinner. Had lots of Sheephead to waist worms and give one hell of a fight.. A couple of bass were returned to the lake as well on the trip. But the best was last day and running out of worms, my oldest pal caught a walleye. Twenty nine inches and nine and a half pounds. It was older than all of us. He got sent back to the deep just out of respect. Our host camp owner told us he thinks that's the largest walleye taken on a line. Would like to know for sure. Best trip in years.

Sounds like a great trip. My best walleye, from the Upper French on the South end of Nippissing, was 27inches and 7 lbs. Nice Fish, can't wait to see some pics.

Where abouts where you in the bay? and what do you use? Ive been going up there for years, so I have an idea but I know where my dad used to fish for the pickeral is alot different then where they go now....we used to go between the islands and in front of the falls but last time I talked to anyone they said they were going more to the middle of the bay between a bouy and the old light house island in about 24 ft of water.......... ive always fished for pike...nailed 84, 2 years ago(personal best) in 7 days and didnt get the chance to get up there last year.... Ive never been big on the pickeral for whatever reason but Im just starting to get into it now, I was thinking about going out a couple nights and seeing if I can round some up so any help would be great. Normally just after the walleye open, we go out to the flats on the lake. North of Berry Isle. and west of Grand Trunk Isle. Not even a nibble out there. This year the walleye were in Callander Bay in the bay on the south side of Smith Isle. The bay is across from Glen Echo Cottages. Depending on the drift and wind direction, we had most of our luck on the east side of the bay, drifting with chartruse jigs and worms. The trick is to hook the worm at the head about three times and let the rest trail out ( about 3-4 ins. ) behind the jig head. The bite was so light, it felt like you were rubbing along a weed leaf.
The water level is down about 6 feet and that may be affecting the location. Glen Echo had to bring in floating docks this year. It's so low, you can stand dry at the old docking locations. There are also lots of heavy Sheephead and only a few pike. I usually consentrate on pike and muskie in the fall.

Wow its down 6 feet? Thats crazy. We always stay at sunbeams bungalows right in callander. I was planning on going up june 19th but had to cancel because of work! BOOO! it sucks but hopefully next month or worst case scenerio next year ill get back up there and see if I can relocate those pike, youll have to update us in the fall of how your musky/pike trip works out.
