NOTTA STEELER
Well-Known Member
In my last post I had a few pics of suckers that T.C. caught in the Notty and refference was made to the fact the Ontario record for White sucker was 5 lbs..
After careful study , I came to the conclusion that the suckers in question were NOT White suckers at all . They are known as " Silver Redhorse Suckers " with the Ontario record being in the 8.8 lbs. range and world record being 11.4 lbs. . Their average length are 15.7 inches , the Ontario record was 27 inches and the world record was 29.1 inches .
The colouration of these fish is so silver and the fight is so strong that it is sometimes difficult to tell if you have a steelhead on or not . The one I caught while fishing with troutchaser felt like a very heavy steelie , head shakes and a long screaming run to the other side of the river . I began to think that it wasn't a steelhead and troutchaser was willing to bet me 20 bucks that it was ... I should have taken the bet ... it was indeed a Silver Redhorse sucker . They have a really large dorsal fin , which we nic named them " sail backs ".
So you see ... a sucker ... is not always ... just ... a ... sucker .
What kind of suckers does your fave fishing spot hold ?
