Currently I have a white river fly rod 5 wt

Im looking to buy something more suitable for steelhead

8 wt I think is what I need correct?

Im not looking for top of the line gear but something thats a good start that I can get good use of

What rod and reel would you suggest?

What do you think my price range would have to be?

A 10 ft 7 wt is a good choice for steelhead but is alittle light for salmon a 8 wt is good for both but it all depends how much you want to spend st croix is good for there price point echo make good rods and if you want to spend the money sage g looms or scott are all great rods

Why would I go for the 7 when I could use the 8 for both and get more use out of it? Im just curious I'm not being a D!ck or anything.

Or is the 7 more enjoyable for fighting steelhead over the higher powered 8 wt?

I noticed there is several models of the st.croix which would you suggest?

I know the quality of loomis - I own 3 for other applications ( not fly)

its all about the fight i use my 10 ft 7 wt single hand and my 11 ft 8 wt spey rod for steel head but the fight is better on the 7 wt i want to get a 6 wt spey for steelhead but try to get a 10 foot rod weather it be 7 or 8 wt the longer rod helps with nymphing and helps when it comes to fighting a fish with alittle more flex with st croix you cant go wrong with there imperial series there priced well

Hey Mad I saw one on ebay with free scientific angler general purpose floating line.
229 w/ shipping, Sold new by a fly shop in colorado.

What do you think?

I was also reading some reviews on the okuma rods/reels. Winning best value award.
Rod and reel for under 200. What do you think about something like that?

sounds like a good deal to me if you want me to take a look at it post the link if you can i dont know alot about okuma so i cant really say anything good or bad about them

if you're looking at a 7wt why not go for a switch rod? st croix makes a nice one, i've seen it in action as well, very nice, can handle short and long casts very well

jmatt does a point i have the st croix one he is talking about in the 8 wt but if your new to it learning spey casting can be a challenge as well

i almost bought my swtich rod from them but ended up buying it at wilsons but ya that will work for you and its always good to get a free fly line as well

a switch rod is just that, you can use it as a one hand caster, or you 'switch' and use a two handed cast, if you're interested at all in spey casting this is the way to start, so don't invest into an expensive spey outfit and hate it

Oh ok, So this would be the same as the traditional with the added benefit of being able to use 2 handed with the spey technique? It will function fine nymphing etc right?

These questions may seem retarded but I have no clue about this lol, I just dont want to look back on this decision wishing I had bought a different rod

ya it works extremely well for nymphing because they are most often 11 plus feet some spey rods get up to 16 feet if you want to try maybe at some point we can get together i can bring my 10 ft 7 wt single hand and my switch rod and you can try them both
