So I got to hit up a little creek known mostly for browns for a bit tonight. Started out with a tan caddis and caught about a three inch rainbow. It was a single barbless only zone, so it popped off easily enough, but I decided after seeing some more little guys going after it to switch to a nymph. Nothing was really rising other than those little guys anyways. So I tried a little hare's ear nymph in a little pool for a bit and ended up getting chub after chub. I was ready to move on and got a little brown.
I tried a few more casts and decided to move on. Other than a few more chub though it was mostly just exploring, until about 8:50. With all the overhanging trees it was getting pretty dim, but I decided to try one last area where I've seen rises before. There were a few caddis flies buzzing around, and quite a few rises happening, so I switched back to my tan caddis. After a few casts with no apparent interest I decided to give it one last try and tie on a grasshopper. It was almost dark and getting tough to even see the grasshopper, but on the first cast, a little splash right behind it. Second cast, same thing. Third cast: as soon as I heard the splash I set the hook and felt something pull way harder than I expected! It ended up being about a ~16" bow. Definitely not what I had expected....totally made my night! Destroyed my grasshopper too, but I was just impressed. Couldn't be disappointed after that surprise!
