I will be doing a big tackle run in the next few days to get stocked up for the runs. I need your input on whether to buy or not.

1) 2 or 3 rapala J-13's. Question: could i use one in the creeks to annoy the salmon? Buy or leave?
2) Beads to put on a bare hook to resemble eggs. Buy or leave?
3) Pinkie worms. Buy or leave?
4) Bucktail jigs. Buy or leave?
5) Yarnies. Buy or leave?

I have lots more on my list but they are for sure something i need. Any recommendations for the salmon or steelhead runs are appreciated!

Thanks!

Really depends on the location you are fishing, are we talking about piers or rivers?

Piers:
Cleo/J-13 are the standard. I've seen a few glow plugs thrown but those are few and far between. I myself would stick to cleos/rapalas.

Rivers:
Roe/beads are the most popular used baits. I would refrain from throwing J-13s through the pools unless you feel like getting in lots of arguments with your fellow anglers, I have seen people let small kwikfish/rapalas/spinners ride in the current/larger slow sections of the river for steelhead though.

Ya I'm talking river here, those were just the artificial stuff I might get, it's too early for roe, plus it makes the fridge smelly. I've already tied a few pink jigs for the salmon run to use under my float.

Oh and if I use worms is it necessary to get the pinkies?

worms and pinkies are two different techniques. You can never have too much, buy it all and then get some more! Stone Flies and wooly buggers are good options.

Can you fish them under a float? I have never actually used a pinky worm, I thought I just fished it under a float.

one of my best days steelheading was with an 8.5' spinning rod using pink worms and hooks I found lying around the river under a float.

Wouldn't you fish a worm under a float too?

ya, you can bottom bounce it too. Just saying that worms and pinkies are different presentations. If one isnt working the other might.

Oh okay thanks man.

Real worms work, but I don't bother with them. Buy a selection of trout beads ,glo roe is my favourite colour, among the popular colours. I carry pink Berkley power worms in 3,4, and 6 inch. I also carry a few other pink worms by various other manufacturers. You can wacky rig the worms or fish them on a jig head or rig them on a slow death hook all under a float. Roe is excellent , but I seldom use it . I usually start with beads, then to pink worms ,then to flies like the ones already mentioned. I also have the jarred single eggs and some of the Berkley power eggs , but they seldom see water. Lure wise spinners and flatfish and smaller cleos all work and I use them when I use a spinning reel instead of a float reel. The 3/4 ounce glo cleos and J13 Rapalas are best used off a pier for salmon.

Great summary could not have said it better myself. These are proven technics used on the pairs and river by most anglers.
