Tandem Rigging...

Ontario Fishing Forums

Help Support Ontario Fishing Forums:

Yep, alabama...so can you not use that in canada/ontario with more than 4 individual lures?

On another note, i am going to claim this rig as my own now (unless its patented or some crap), or unless its a commonly used tactic.

Im calling it the "Ontario Rig" simply because we need to try to keep up appearances in the bass fishing world with the likes of Florida, Texas, Alabama, Carolina...

Seriously though, has anyone ever tried it with any success?

It's a common enough rig. Drop shot rig with a jig head on the end instead of a weight. I use it at the eastern gap where you can drop shot straight down off the wall. The jig head will give you issues if you try using this rig in heavy weeds though.

If I was a fish, I would target the lone single fish, not the huge school of fish. What is that they say, "Safety in Numbers"...

If you were a fish, you'd probably die of starvation. Most predators have a low sucess rate when it comes to hunting, lone lions suceed 10-15%. A pride is up to 35% effective. Lone bass suceed 10% of the time, and for minnow to be alone would be very rare as they travel in schools. End result, you'd die of starvation. You quote "Safety in Numbers" but does not sound like you truely understand the concept. Baitfish feel safer in numbers thinking a school may confuse the predator and the weak and youngest can't keep up with the rest. Once the old, weak and young fall behind then they are prey. Predators have amazingly fast reflexes, they have to to survive. In a recent documentary about swordfish they were shown corraling baitfish and then swimming thru the swarm to feed. They worked as a team to get their fill. No lone baitfish swimming around. I have not seen any doc on bass or freshwater fish. They may/may not hunt the same but SM travel in schools for some reason. No one considers them documentary material, who knows? Hunter's don't have to be intelligent although swordfish are know to be and so are tuna another predator. That there is two methods predators hunt, land or sea methods are the same.

I was trying to be ironic... :)

Your probably true. I just thought of a great analogy: like in grade school dodge ball, if you aim at the lone single kid, you might miss, but if you aim for the bunch of kids, you otta hit one.

Thanks for sharing all the information.

This is kinda like a documentary on bass... I watch this all the time while, wishing that one of these bass will take my lure!

Cheers.

P.S - hope i didn't pinch a nerve.

$h!t...
Can we still call it the Ontario rig though?

Sorry Noobs
I didn't get the irony there. Just wanted to point out how predator's go after their prey and their low sucess rates. Seems most of the time I go out they are shut down too. The hardest trick to find what will turn them on again, or just have to wait it out.

I use dry raccoon pellets, thread them on a hook and.... oh wait, wrong thread DOH!

No problem, Grubman. Don't tell me about fish shutting down. Seems like every day I have time to fish, a cold front is moving in.

Drop shotting with a jighead on the bottom instead of a sinker is fairly common practice, especially with pan fish. Totally legal in Ontario, only two hooks (as previously mentioned 100 times, lol).

Most people will use two different plastics, and it can be very effective.

It's also a great ice fishing technique.

It not only helps gauge which bait is more effective for the situation, but it can tell you where fish are relating to structure. Are they hitting the bottom deadstick? Or are they hitting 12" up the line, 14" up the line etc.

Can't say I've tried the umbrella rig, but I'm sure it's effective. I don't want to deal with the headaches associated with slinging that ridiculous thing around. A spinner bait with multiple blades should have the same effect and you will foul-hook less fish.

The "Ontario Rig" (I love the name) is something that I thought I invented 2 years ago. I haven't seen anyone else doing it, but I came up with it the same way you did, while drop shotting I thought "what if I put a jig on the bottom". It's been my go-to smallie rig since then. I've learned a few things through experimentation:

-shakey head jigs work best, and put a roboworm on there - you've got a winner
-space the top hook up further than you would with a standard drop shot
-berkley gulp minnows and leaches are deadly on the top hook
-this rig will hang up easily in rock piles (where is is also very effective) when drifted, or cast/retrieve. Vertical works best
-put all together using flouro leader for clear water, but it's a PITA to re-tie 3 knots (double uni, palomar, palomar)

And most importatntly, 2 smallies on the same line is a freaking BLAST!! I've had it happan about 5 or 6 times, usually the smaller one will get off, but it's awesome fighting 2 at once!

Where did this Crazy $40.00 Dollar Amount Come From??

I'm going to Pick Up 3/4 of these for Bass Fishing. Had a Look Around (As Below)

Haven't see any, even near that kind of Price. Highest so far is a Yumbrella 4 Wire with 4-4" Yum Minnows and 3 different coloured Jigheads.

I was able to make one for about $2. Mine does not have the weighted bait fish head in the center, but I did put a snap there for another bait. It looks like my baitfish are chasing another bait. The irony, trying to catch bass with a rig small fish get eaten by bigger fish. Have not tried it yet, will have to wait for next year. I'll post a pic later.

Fish thanks for posting cost of the rigs. I'd never pay over $10 for just chromed wire bend into shape, when I can do it cheaper myself.
