Texas Rigs

Help Support Ontario Fishing Forums:

I'm new to the Texas rig but I already love it and have already caught a ton of bass on it this year. I like to use a shaky head jig like the Chompers flipping shaky head jig with a YUM F2 Vibra King Tube, I like this tube because of the ribs on them and they are great for putting your hook through to make it weed less!

Bass is open year round in my zone!

My number one bait for texas rigging is the Berkley crazy legs chigger craw, black with red fleck. I like to rig it on a #3 Mustad weighted hook (1/16th oz or 1/8thoz). There the hooks with the belly weight, I find it keeps your presentation from flipping over on itself.

I also like YUM Dinger worms, Berkley ripple shad, Strike King Rage Lobsters

I like some other baits too but these are the ones I use most frequently

I'm just getting into it myself but haven't had much luck. Any techniques you could share?
I find it hard to get it to the bottom without getting hung up... I fish Rondeau Bay and it's crazy thick.

Mister twisters dark green with speckles, crawfish (same pattern) and beaver tails. Size and weight all depends on the scenario.

Hope it helps and happy fishing.

If its thick with cover, use a bullet weight to punch through. I don't like using a bullet weight if its really shallow though, unless your getting hit on faster retrieves and the bass are really active.

If it's shallow, try a top water style retrieve, sometimes this works really well. If there is an opening in the cover, stop, and let your bait fall through the gap before retrieving again.

In 10 FOW or more, def. use a bullet weight if your fishing bottom or deeper in the water column. Sometimes even in deeper water bass will be active towards the surface chasing baitfish, if thats the case, go weightless and fish it top water style. Slow and steady, fast, stop and go all work, you just have to experiment and find whats working.

When your fishing really shallow rock, like 4FOW or less, texas rig a crawfish and toss it out. Just lift the rod tip gently and work the bait really slow. Active summer bass will absolutely hammer this approach, especially in the evenings of a hot summer day.

Hope this helps a little? Or maybe even created 50 other questions? Haha, good luck to you!

Try using a bullet weight or something like a shaky head jig with a keeper on it. Good luck

Rondeau is 2-10 ft ..... it's where Bob Izumi grew up fishing.
What type of bullet weight ... is that different than a bell weight?
Do you put a some type of stopper above it?
Any pics would be appreciated!

for the bulley wieght you can use something like a bobber stop but you don't have to use anything because it usally stays right infront of your hook. I would recommend the tungstun wieghts but they are more expensive than the lead wieghts. check out the different ones on basspro.com , heres a link to one of my favorite bullet wieght- http://www.basspro.com/Strike-Kingreg;-Tour-Grade-Tungsten-Weights/product/10225538/62211?cmCat=CROSSSELL_THUMBNAIL
Also check out jigs like the chompers shaky head jig they work well to for texas rigs, just screw in your plastic bait then put your hook through- http://www.basspro.com/Chompers-Football-Shaky-Head-Jigheads/product/98303/79846
