Being a member of other fishing boards (and having been banned from just as many) I have seen personality differences that, rather than arriving at some neutral conversational space of accommodation, are all too frequently set in stark, ideological relief with no hope of amelioration.
It is the case that with such sport as ours, passionate exchanges are part of the antagonistic thrust-and-parry by associates and acquaintances and can often be mitigated (poignantly) by finding the opportunity to spend some time on the water together. I have experienced too many negative episodes on other boards (whereI have posted lengthy reports, stories, and have been a volunteer) than I care to recount. Responses are clearly posted with the intent of provocation; often such “generous†contributions are only a line or two (it seems that the brevity is not so much a matter of the kind of economy we see in Hemmingway, but rather a quickly exhausted vocabulary choked out by a wanting intellect).
Some of us have family obligations and responsibilities that often limit our ability to get to fishable water (not to mention during fishable conditions!!). So when fortune provides the gift of some time on the water we savor it as though it were life renewing. By extension we live vicariously (here, at this site) through those who have the fortune to live on one of the many extraordinary watersheds this great country has to offer, and not so constrained as some of us and can fish more often than we.
I’m done and have restricted my subscription to only two sites (this being one). I found here a generosity of spirit, and though have not had the pleasure of fishing with many here, I can say unequivocally that the most important knot on the river is that which I have found here—the knot that is friendship.
That’s why I’m here and thanks to you all for making this an enjoyable and generous forum…
