I was looking into renting a houseboat some time in the future and taking it along the trent severn checking out the sites and making stops along the way. And I would want to carry an inflatable dinghy with a 5hp or something so I could get some proper fishing in when not trolling along the way.
But then it got me daydreaming. Imagine if you were rich and you had a captain take you around in a big pleasure craft. You could be chilling on the deck pounding brew while trolling. Then drop anchor and hop on your dinghy and go explore the rivers, inlets, bays, connected lakes, etc. and find some fish.
I had never heard of this before, but there's something called the Great Loop:
You start in florida and you work your way all the way up to new york. Most of it on the intercoastal instead of the atlantic. You cut up the hudson and can go all the way to montreal and to ottawa and take the rideau to the trent severn to simcoe and out to georgian bay to huron to michigan and pass by chicago. Or you can take Lake O to erie and pass through detroit and st clair up to huron.
From chicago you can go down all the way to the big easy and then follow the gulf back to florida.
Imagine all the species you could catch from trolling or casting along the way. Bass, trout, pike, walleye, drum, musky, salmon, redfish, tarpon, snook, stripers, asian carp (they'll just jump into your boat), just to name the obvious. You'd probably nail all those just from trolling for so long.
If I win the lottery, I'm doing this. For now, I can seriously see myself doing some of the trent severn if I can get like 4 guys to split the cost.
Anyone ever done something remotely like this? There's many other places in the world you can do mini versions of this. Would love to do it between all those inlets off the coast of BC. Where would you do it? As in a continuous trip without sleeping on land.
You can also do the erie canal from buffalo to the hudson, a couple hours drive north of NYC. That one is real easy. Narrow, calm and a mixed bag of species.
