I don't have any special set-up geared just for lakers. I just use a normal "float---split shots---leader---bait" set-up that pretty much works for all three species. It just depends on what happens to come by that particular day.

I have a feeling where you were is quite deep,no need to name, did you use bobber stops and rig longer?
 
Ice out lakers are usually very shallow, as well as fall/winter spawners.

I've caught lakers in 4' of water in spring.

It could be but in my experience was opposite at lake Ontario and some bigger rivers. I'm not disagreeing with you just saying from my experience.
 
Was so busy this fall that I didn't think I will be able to hit the river before the year end.
Fortunately, I had couple of chances to get out and was lucky enough to catch something.
