K with september coming up real soon, what kind of line would you guys suggest? braided?? etc and with lures i heard spoons and minnows are the way to go and what size hook??? i knew a guy who had his fish hook bent perfectly straight tryina fight a salmon, so any suggestions?? thanks

It all depends if you are downrigging or fishing the river; if downrigging the limeman's latter back plug (white with black strips) couldn't be beat, sliver fox spoons also produced, mainly sliver with blues, greens or oranges in colour. If you're fishing the river (my favorite), I use a floating roe bag and put a split shot about 2ft. down the line or you can also use a float, I use sliver circle hooks in this case, which I find work best.

hope this helps,

If you toss spoons from at the river, you'll be called a snagger.
I mean you could cast out like Rapala's in a pool of fish and salmon will smash it. I know. Because I have done and seen it myself.

But I don't think that is what you are asking? I am guessing you are asking about Salmon fishing from the mouth of the river, right? At which point you won't be called a snagger for tossing lures with treble hook.

I personally recommend 20+lb# of Braided line. (PowerPro, Fireline, etc...)
I personally use 30lb PowerPro.

Rod? 8'6"~10'6" Medium~MediumHeavy will do.

LONG HANDLE! NET! IS! A MUST!

Some glow in dark spoons, Some larger crank baits?

That is it. Cast & reel & Hang On!

What kinds a Reels you guys be using? Might have to skip out on Salmon this year or risk it with a really cheapo reel. :)
Really hope I'll be able to hit them piers this year. *cries*

yeah from a riverm mouth and the river itselp, going up to the saugeen river in sept, so going to try my look with both river, and river mouth.

You just need a reel that can hold plenty of lines~

Reel I use is Daiwa Regal Xi 3500 which holds 210yard of 12lb line. Been using for 3 years or so.
PowerPro 30lb is mono diameter of only 8lb #. So it's more than good enough.

Reel works fine for me, $45 or so only too.

Hi lansdowne03,

Personally I like to use lighter equipment. I use 10lbs test, maybe 12lbs sometimes. I'm always worried about snapping my rod if I were to use a braided line. I also use a 9'6'' rod (Med fast action) and a medium size reel, just like Mikey said it's important to have a lot of line, I've seen guys get spooled in Owen Sound before.

Last year there was this Old man must be 70+ fishing the bottom of the Humber. He out fished everyone and took 1/2 as many cast.

He used the same spoon always, perch pattern tear drop shape, He did this weird circle motion with the tip of his rod. Anyone know why that was?

He didn't talk much English so I couldn't really get a decent answer but what ever he was doing worked as he landed more fish than anyone.

Bright orange, green and black.

Wonder if my Pflueger Supreme 8035MG will do if I put some braided 15lb test on it. Should give me over 250yrds of line.
Think my reel will hold up to a Salmon though? :)

It'll work perfectly.

Last year there was a moment where I actually wanted to see my Shimano Convergence 10'0" Medium-Slow rod break.

So when I had a fish on I literally set to drag so tight that salmon could only take very little line off at the initial run.

I really wanted to see how hard I could force the rod and due to it's slow action I could feel a slight bending right by the

handle. But the rod held up without a problem, 30lb PowerPro had no problem with tightER drag.

And yes hook on cleo got bent a little... yes that must have put a lot of pressure on fish... but I just had to push my

rod to the limit and see how it would react.

First of all, what time of the day was this?

Now,,, during the salmon run time period due to a lot of rain Humber River flows out a lot of muddy water compare to other rivers (atleast that is how i see it). I am guessing the old man knew where to cast, beyond the muddy water to the clear water. or to the clear water next to muddy water.
Not sure about the circular motion.
