Nothing beats spending time on the water, fishing. Especially when that time spent is teaching a loved one how to fish! Monday was a day that hopefully sets my daughter up for a future in the outdoors! I asked her if she would like to go fishing with me, she said yes, and hurried off to get ready. We headed off to Gagnons to first get some worms, then up to Heber Downs CA to fish the pond.

She was at first turned off on the idea that worms were fish food, saying thats disgusting! but after explaining that fish love to eat them, she came around to the idea and was not affraid to at least look at them.

We had some hits, and some misses. and even something I have never caught before. But it all doesn't matter, because the excitement in her voice was the biggest thrill of all.

She didn't think too fondly of this catfish, even though every time i go out on my own she asks me to catch a catfish!

If the catfish wasn't enough to freak her out, this sure did the trick, especially when it let go and landed right in front of us.

She then found something she could handle!

And the thrill of all summed up in 14 seconds of pure joy!

Good stuff, many fond memories going to that park as a kid, and watching the fish move around the creek. Were probably juvenile trout or chubb.

When you get deep enough into the woods there, I always feel like I'm in bear territory. With the news of bears in the Oshawa/Whitby area this week, it's no wonder I would get that feeling.

Yes Dilli, stocked for an annual kids fishing derby, similar to the one in Uxbridge but rainbows instead of brookies. I don't think they stock quite as many though, and I'm not sure if the trout survive for very long after being stocked. In Uxbridge they do.

Not trying to hijack this thread. I have been to the uxbridge 3 straight years. do they allow fishing after the derby? it's surrounded by houses. I don't know how the locals deal with someone fishing that's not from around there.

NO ONE IS ALLOWED TO FISH THERE...................

Waaaaaaaaaaah Diane be trippin'

Was a phenomenal spot for night perch for me (one after another every cast), and also a lot of brook trout, many bigger than average for southern Ontario. Most of the brookies in there are stockers though, but hey, a brookie is a sweet catch even if it's in a stocked pond.

Never caught a bass there but I'm told they're in there too.

she took to it like a natural. didn't even have to show her how to reel in. just have to keep them into fish. if not, kids will lose interest. so panfish is the best option til shes older, then i'll take her out to DD's secret spots! lol

Nice to see the fasination in their faces, as they hold and look at the fish.
I found with my young ones, I got them one of those kids spin cast combos. Got a few colourful orflashy lures (- the hooks), and they cast and watch the lure work as theycrank. Kept them busy till I was able to hook a fish for them to wind in.
Enjoy the many more outings togeather.

Wow! She actually touched the fish! This is as close as my Granddaughter would get to hers last year when I wanted a pic.

I reckon we caught about $20 worth of bait that day! Next time out--Lesson 2: Touching fish!
