Bright lights; big city...in search of BIG T.O. island fishy.
I communted into Toronto on Sunday 12 July 2009. The weather was very nice as I walked down to the harbour, listening to the Honda Indy cars whizzing through the track but a couple blocks away. Vendors lined the streets filled with pedestrians making the best of the sun kindly shining down on us. With my HMX spinning rod paired with my Shimano spooled with 20# powerpro, I board a vessel and make my way onto Centre Island.
leaving harbour
Schooner rushing to the Starbucks
Just like your favourite Toronto nightclub; the line to get to the Island appeared long, was a short wait, expensive cover and no one was inside. It was a "ghost town" sort of feeling as all centerville rides and attractions were closed, but my intersts lie off to the water traffic ways. I can see the narrow arteries teaming with day trading carp, running red lights and harrasing strolling ducks on their way to their office duties.
Many Largemouth lazily sat on the curbs, looking for handouts, but not food offerings as I offered a senko to one overgrown bass that wore it as a hat and moved on. I walked the shoreline, fancasting every 30 meters or so looking to hook up with anything really. I came across this pike, blind in one eye, and offered him a meal. Despite putting the meal infront of his nose,he wasn't interested...so I gave him what spare change I had and two smokes and he was off.
The rest of the day was quite the same, no fish caught, but still the experience was enjoyable. I stopped and helped a gentleman fishing with his daughter who couldn't understand how the bail on his 1982 spinning outfit worked and wished them more success than I. Talked to some folk at the dock and even got a hello from a cute girl impressed at the rod I was carrying.
A big thanks to David Kearney, who helped with some info on theToronto Islands...you and tangledlines deserve the utmost respect from one fisherman to another for your Toronto Islands exploits. Despite the lack of fish, it was a beauty of a day to be out. Honourable mention to Frozenfire as he responded to my Q about the bite on the islands. Kudos all around gentlemen.
