First off, I would like to say that Gagnon's has excellent customer service, as they have proven time and time again. My day on the water started out great with a replacement pair of waders under warranty, no hassles, easy peasy. Before I even finished explaining why I was in, they offered me a replacement pair.
With the money I saved not needing to buy a new pair of waders, I splurged a little (can't buy all your gear at Dollarama, all the time). By a little, I mean a little, and I simply purchased a couple flies and a top water frog.
I love topwater action, and topwater pike for me usually consists of flipping minnows in spots where they smash them as soon as they breach the surface, in addition to spoons that flutter along the surface. I wanted to challenge myself today so I put away my spinners and spoons and went ahead with the frog.
I was getting good hits but no hook sets, so I quickly switched to a worm and nabbed a nice largie, followed by a huge perch.
I also got what I think was a pike on a worm just before the perch, but it broke off.
Content with having landed some nice fish, I switched back to the frog as the evening was drawing to a close. A few more hits, and finally a take!
You don't need 30lb braid to use artificial frogs. I was using 6lb test and I was casting far and pulling hard, without worrying about it breaking off. A good trilene knot can go a long way in keeping your bait on your line.
All in all, a fantastic day on the water.
I have a date with a large pike tomorrow morning before work, pics and report hopefully to follow.
