Wow we certainly had an incredible weekend weather wise. I took advantage of the thaw to get out to the Niagara region for some carp angling. I only got out for the afternoon yesterday but I was rewarded with a couple of golden tanks.
Here is my set up. I used puffed corn on the hook with grits pack bait.

The first fish was over 20.

The second was 12-14.

It took a while to get some action but it was a great afternoon .

Wow! Nice carp! I though you were taking about goldfish... What type of reel is that? Looks like a really high profile... Is it easy to cast.

Thanks for another great post Hammercarp, some beautiful fish!

I have caught a few smaller carp when fishing for other species but never got a big one. I would like to try my had at it at some point. Do you know anyone who uses a center pin for carp? I know some people do but I'm not sure how.

Thanks. It is a Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6000. It is suitable for carp, channel cats, pike and musky.
Thanks for the reply. I saw a fishing for carp in the fall, and his set up looked super cool. He had this reel that would beep when the line was going off... any way. Hope to nab one of the big carp this summer.

You could probably drift a few kernels of corn on a hook under a bobber. But the carp might end up spitting your hook...

This guy uses a pin for them, Looks like he is using a bottom rig with a float as an indicator.

I was the one who commented and asked if he drifted with his pin.

I looks like he is from ontario too

I've never understood the appeal to go "carping" but hey to each his own. Looks like you got yourself some tanks OP good work. also to this video, I also don't get this clicker when you have a fish on.

Catching big fish is always fun, and monster and trophy fish is every fisherman's quest. I just never understood catch and release with carp fishing. aren't they aggressive intrusive species that hurt every single other fish species? enlighten me if i am wrong please.

I hear they don't fight that hard pound for pound but I think a 25lb fish would still fight hard.

Being primarily a trout fisherman I myself have turned my nose up at fish like these in the past but I have decided I want to expand my fishing repertoire.

If I puts a big bend in my rod I don't care all that much whats on the other end, not like i'm going to keep it anyway. Trout will always be my favorite tho

I know, i enjoy every type of fishing. My favourite is also river fishing for trout and salmon, specially steelhead. something about knowing 40 fish sitting in front of you is very exciting and addictive. plus they jump and throw hooks all the time. a true game fish!

they don't tend to fight very hard, kinda like a tug boat, just keeps going, i've caught a couple while targeting other species, one a cleo if you can figure that out.....

thanks for posting and sharing hammercarp, those are some clean looking tanks you landed man way to go :D

Carp are very hard fighters. Generally guys that say they don't fight have minimal experience with them. They may have got one or two in the early spring when that water is still pretty cold or they foul hooked them. Carp are at their best when the water warms up a bit.

Pinning for carp is catching on and more guys do it every year. The bait is fished statically . You could use the same floats you use for trout but carp anglers generally like floats that have a pretty slender cross section and are pretty long. The most extreme examples are the asian floats which can be 18 inches long and as thick around as a pencil at their widest. Floats for carp fishing will generally have the weight that should used with them marked on the float in grams. The hook should be about 4 to 6 inches from the weight. A take is often indicated when the float rises up out of the water. We call this a lift bite. This happens because when a carp takes the bait it will pull the weight up off of the bottom resulting in the float popping up. . Usually a #6 hook will do fine. For bait one or two kernels of corn and you are set to go. Very big carp arev taken on the float with a centre pin outfit. I netted this one for a good friend. It went 43 lbs.

From what I have read and seen one of the best ways to fish for them on the lake Ontario shoreline in Toronto is to use a float set up or to free line bread. . Check out some of the post in this section.
