Hey Everyone

New to the forum, was hoping to get some information as well as share some with people living in the GTA and shorebound.
I managed to get to Toronto Island today to try my luck... took alot of info from this guide http://fishontoronto.com/fishing-the-toronto-islands
Started over at the channel on Wards Island around 8 am and worked my way through, casting mostly spinners, crankbaits, spoons, topwater frogs and some softbaits. I'm using a 6'6 medium action rod, and 10lb mono.
As much fun as it was to finally get a line wet, for 6 hours, I had *maybe* 2 bites (quite possibly weeds)
The weather started out pretty hazy, then turned quite hot and sunny (nice sunburn to prove it)
Throughout the day I saw some schools of young yellow perch, some carp, and a couple pike. The pike actually kind of crept out from under a dock, and loitered under about 4 inches of water and stared at me. No matter what I threw at him, nearly hitting him in the face a couple times. Nothing, seemed very disinterested.
I was able to work on my retrieve alot today, quick jerks, pauses and slow returns.
My question is, was my bad luck something on my end, or is this unseasonable weather and time of year not favorable for fishing?
It was great trying out some new lures and practicing returns again, but I would have much more fun pulling in a couple fish. Any possible pointers you guys might have would be much appreciated.
on a side note, anyone looking to fish the sunfish cut be prepared for some brutal bushwacking, took me some time and some thorns to get there.

on another side note, Im going to get up to the Port Elgin area for some fishing this summer... saugeen river, lake Huron Etc... if anyone knows of any good areas on the saugeen or around I would love the help.

Thanks

yes you are correct the time of year, water temp, the bright intense sunlight, the days are not long enough, the moon phases.....are all contributing factors...
the way i see it for the pike...water temp...and spawning factors...their sense to spawn overrides everything else.
its like going to your first grade 9 dance and being too nervous over a girl...a slow song comes on...you want ask someone to dance but you realise your standing there in your underwear
between the cold of being in your underwear, self consciousness, and all the nervousness of possible rejection, and your hormones all outa wack .....you are a mess....so too are the male pike.

trust me it is not easy anytime of year at the islands....typically the month of may it gets way better....late june and early july is great......but the early trips give you experience and scouting.

we all went through this steep learning curve there.....islands are a beast....get yourself some $20.00 polarized sun glasses...that is my best advice.

Thanks for the report wrdjackson! I haven't had success this season either, just 1 pike. About your line, I used to have 10lb mono spooled but I found it did not cast far enough for my liking. About what size/weight lures are you chucking?

That question is a tough one, as a good portion of my tackle has been found snorkeling at a fishing spot near my farm. On average, I would say most of them fall into the medium size range ( vague I know) occasionally throwing some larger spinners and larger spoons, with some more modestly sized crankbaits. I have heard that pike will go for just about anything, and the sizes I use will catch everything but the smaller panfish, although at this point I would be happy to land anything with a pulse. In regards to the line I use, I went a little cheap (redwolf?) paying about $4 for the whole spool of line. It has been curling alot on me, not sure if its just memory from a long winter or purely poor line quality. I have been thinking about upgrading the line situation, and only have one rod to spool, so would be interested in going for a pricier line. Any thoughts on braided/ floro? I use a decent sized spinning reel, and usually use 6 inch wire leaders. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

on saturday i noticed that i missed lots of pike as i scared them away as i walked along the shoreline or they spotted me above them....the pike are not used to such shallow water and get pretty freaked out and paranoid..esspecially around the smaller ponds i would find a swirl of silt simular to that you would find after spooking carp...
stealth is the name of the game......

I noticed the same when I was therr, ontop of that when its real sunny out and the water is clear and shallow. They dart back the moment they sense u standing above!
