Hello there. I'm new to fishing - just started this July. Can't catch a mudskipper if it sat on my lap but so long as I'm out by the water I'm having a good time.

Stumbled upon this forum a short while back and read a few topics and wanted to say thanks to whomever is responsible for maintaining it. It's really appreciated.

I do have a question though, regarding regulations and enforcement. Not sure if this is the right place for it; do point me to the right subforum if not:

I'm a by-the-book kind of guy so I was really annoyed today to run into a couple of fishermen that were apparently harvesting juvenile browns by the bucketload - literally, they had a bucket which they were quickly filling up. I suspect they were running a live-bait shop or something. Anyway, I walked up to them and asked them if they had a fishing license and what type it was. One of them produced a Conservation license and I pointed out that according to the regulations they could only keep 2 browns. I also suggested that the juveniles were probably off-limits completely. However, I was not sure how far I could take this beyond asking them to set the dozen or so they had caught over the limit free.

So, my questions are:

a. Is there a size limit for browns?

b. What else could/should I have done?

Thanks in advance.

I do not think that there is a minimum length on brown trout. As far as what else you could have done I would recommend looking up the M.N.R.'s tip line and using it to turn in the offenders.Taking pictures of them and their car would help the game warden find & punish them if they take off before he arrives.

I'm assuming that this was in either zone 16, 17, or 18, in which case the limites are S=5, C=2. (sport and conservation license). If it's one or two people fishing, they were definitely over. If they had a conservation license, they'd have to have 6 people fishing to be able to retain 12 brown trout.

As Staffman mentioned above, there is no size requirement to keeping brown trout. If the people fishing didn't have the common sense to release the juvi trout, they obviously have no problems keeping more than their limit of trout.

On some north stretches of the Credit and Grand rivers, killing any browns are strictly prohibited. They usually have signs posted along the river.

I wish I was there with you to make the phone call.

I wish I had that number too. Thanks. I've saved it for next time although I really hope there isn't one.

Yes this was zone 16 and I suspect only one of them had a license so they were so far over the limit it wan't funny.

I wish I was there too, I would have raced you to make the call :)
I just posted on another thread about how these people are actually stealing from you and I, which is what they are doing.
I saved that number on my cell about 15 mins ago.

The ironic thing is, they're stealing from themselves too. If they wait for those juvies to mature, a couple would feed them easily (and taste a lot better) if that's what they were after. I have a sneaking suspicion though that they wanted to use them for bait.
