Twas the night before Steelheading, when all through the river,
The temperatures were dropping, enough to give us a shiver;
The split-shot were hung near the bobber with great care,
In hopes that St. Steelie would soon be there;
The anglers were nestled all snug near the river bed,
While visions of rainbows danced in their heads;
And my bro' in his Patagonia, and I in my Simms,
Had just turned on the flashlight, to remove any dim.
When out on the water there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the shore to see what was the matter.
Onto the river I flew like a flash,
Just enough time to light a little hash.
The rising sunshine on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to the moving objects down below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
A big f'ing rainbow jumped up so near.
With a little bit of pink cheeks, so lively and such a warm feely,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Steelie.
More rapid than eagles his headshakes they came,
And he barrel rolled, and somersaulted, and called out the bait name;
"Now, ROE-SAC! now, PINKIE! now, KWIK-FISH and YARN-FLY!
On, MARABOU! on TROUT-BEAD! on, WOOLLY-BUGGER and STONE-FLY!
To the top of the river water! to the top of the rock wall!
Now splash away! splash away! splash away all!"
As dry leaves that before the wild winter storms fly,
When the snow & cold comes, let's jump to the sky,
So up to the river-top the rainbows they all flew,
With the river full of fish, and St. Steelie was in there too.
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL AND TO ALL A CHROME NIGHT...
