Hi Everyone,

If I am not mistaken, open season on Walleye is coming up soon. This is one type of fish I never managed to catch, and did not spend much time trying either. This season I have a desire to catch one of these great fish. As I heard , this may be challenging task.

I would like to ask everyone, can you please recommend some good (hot) spots for Walleye fishing. Preferably within 1 to 2 (maximum) hours drive from Toronto. At the same time if you have some tips for Walleye fishing it would be appreciated if you can share it.

Thanks in advance!

you should try port perry of lake scugog.
nice and close and decent walleyes. not the biggest ones around though.

some parts of port perry are deemed a fish sactuary though. read your regs. :D

Some advice...

fish from dusk till dawn... the walleyes are going to be hard to catch in the afternoon, unless you're fishing deep.
they have eyes that are sensitive to light, hence they feed primarily in the dark hours where light is minimal. in my experience, wallies tend to hug to the substrate on bottom, so most will be taken in that area (however, I have seen wallies smack topwater lures! --very rare though.)

i would use minnow style lures (shad raps for example) and twister tail grub (white or yellow works for me).
in terms of live bait, use live worms, leeches, or minnows. All work.

How far away is Wasaga beach from you? If you happen to have a boat, im pretty sure there would be lots. I remember catching them there.

Bearing in mind I was just a young private then and.. Well. Quite intoxicated..

frozenfire & HyperFox ,

thanks for some tips and suggestion, I appreciate it. I am in midtown Toronto, I think it would take 1,5 - 2 hours to Wasaga, I do not know why, can not explain it, but I am not too keen on Wasaga.

I hope to get some more tips with some good spots for Walleye, maybe some more precise spot if it is not too much to ask for? But in any case i thank you for your help so far.

Here is a problem for those without boat(s)!

Like frozenfire have said... somewhat darker hours is the best.

But
boat rentals do not operate during those hours.

Oh well.

Thanks for this frozenfire. I do not have boat though, Can I hope to catch walleyes from the shore there or I should not even try without the boat? Any particular spot you can recommend ?
You said : "nice and close and decent walleyes. not the biggest ones around" - I would be happy with any walleye at all, even baby one...

Ey.. No problem.. You can catch wall eye close to shore but only just before dawn, and before and after dusk.

As for location, In your area, Im not of much use and would just be speculating.

But Id suggest picking up a couple of LED stobe lures and perhaps a few glow-in-the-dark lures. Small spinners. Just remember they arent a terribly huge fish overall so putting on a 7 1/2" musky killer isnt going to work here. lol

Use bright colors like red, chartreuse, yellow or white.

Do not stick your fingers in thier mouths.. They have teeth.

Also use a slow retrieve, too fast, and they might ignore it. Keep it close to the bottom.

Well...

You can fish the Lake Scugog from shore, that every so bloody well known spot at highway 7a causeway to the main lake side of it. Early morning and evening hours. I've caught few wallies there before.

If you are lucky enough to NOT catch anything well... maybe there is a musky swimming around :D

My brother doesn't enjoy fishing as much as he used to and doesn't even like to touch fish either or can even lip a bass. So my brother and I usually go to Lake Scugog (only on sunny warm day) to enjoy the wether and as a bonus we stop by few of the sanctuary area to fish for monster sunfish (right after area opens up). I think I am going to take my 5year nephew with me this time.

Lake Scugog, 2nd Sat. in May Wally is open and all sanctuaries are open aswell. (make sure you don't target those bass swimming in same water :p )

halleb,

as walleye opener approaches, send me a pm and I can tell you a few spots that i've landed walleye around the port perry and general lake scugog area.

i still remember me and my buddy's best night at port perry. we went to try canal lake in teh kawarthas without much luck, so we decided to go to port perry and not waste the night. we landed about 6 or 7 walleye, lots of crappie, 2 out of season muskies (42 incher too!), and foul hooked a 20 lb carp!

Yeah, sure we can go together. I do not mind catching carp either, but preferably 15 lb + , so far I caught carp of about 7 lb , they are strong fish and fight really good
