hi,
i have a brother coming down from mexico and im gonna take him perch fishing.
just wondering if the cheap rods will do fine for the perch in lake erie........ like the 30$ ones.

i concur. thing is that my uncle and i go on lake erie and we troll(with trolling gear) but we also go perching in early summer and my bro's coming and i wanna take him.
or even a canadian tire combo just a simple light spinning rod and reel. and if we do go for rainbow and walleye or pickerel then we have that already iv got a few trolling rods.

if your not really gonna be fishing heavy with it it doesnt really matter too much like if i was on the water for at least 10 hours a week i would need a good quality rod and reel that i can depend on all the time however if its just a once in a while thing to throw in the car trunk you can get away with the cheap combos

I use a 7'0 Rapala Magnum and a Shimano IX2000 reel and Berkley 6 or 8lb Trilene smooth casting line, for pretty much all species, all of which can be purchased at Walmart. Altogether would come to around $75, so if you want the cheapest possible option than one of the combos should do the trick.

The drag button placement on some of the cheap combos annoys me, it's sometimes in a spot where it's vulnerable to unintentional adjustment. But if it's mainly perch you're after, it shouldn't matter much.

x2 to this ^^^^^

My very first combo was a telescopic Zebco spincaster with its own tackle box, bought two of them, $19.99 for the set. One for me and one for my girlfriend. I used mine for 2 years (no joke) before it gave up on me and banged out atleast a couple hundred rockies, some smallies and suckers up in Haliburton. Shortly after its demise I bought a Shimano IX reel to replace the spincast. BIG mistake. lol Didnt last the day.

For that price range I'd say your absolute best bet is to look into some spincast reels.. I'd really advise staying away from spinning reels for that price range.

Give ZEBCO a chance!

i ended up buying a quantum re-ax for 24$. it was on sale. origional price was 80$ and i got it at candian tire for 24....not bad. i got 8lb mono on it

Hey thats not bad at all! Always good when theres a sale too

I'm also running 8lb mono this year

Just a kind word of advice, keep it on LIGHT duty.. I owned a quantum too a while back, the optix. -I believe it was a 2000 or 3000 size. Op25 or something like that if I remember correctly , and I actually managed to snag a few nice fish on it! a 10lb pike, and a bunch of nice bullheads back when I chased cats. The problem was, I started to get a little too confident with the reel.

So I decided to rig for carp one day and lucky for me I started to get a run. And it was a BIG one

The reel immediately started to shut down. lol First the drag failed (and I always start on low) then the gears started to seize. By the time I had landed the fish by pinching a heck of, the main shaft holding the spool was completely bent, making the spool sit on close to a 3 degree angle towards the bail (not longer perpendicular) and it was rotating like a spinning top. lol  The reel was making a terrible, terrible grinding noise on the retrieve before it completely jammed. The day was over needless to say. lol

I pretty much stopped purchasing freshwater reels since then. And havent looked back.

So keep it light and best of luck man! Its sure to get you some good times regardless!

thanks im only gonna be going for perch. or maybe some small cats. 1-2lb the most. but yea i caught a small carp maybe 3lb the other day and yea even on my bass rod it gave me a whirl. funn tho. thanks for ur input
