I recently purchased a used bamboo fly rod and it is slightly warped in some places. They are very small kinks and the rod is still fishable. The question is does anybody have any experience with setting warped bamboo rods? Im assuming you need to heat the warped areas and set them on a straight edge. Will a low heat applied to the rod potentially ruin the varnish? Maybe i should just leave it be...

A couple of years ago I spent some time at a small custom manufacturer of bamboo rods just South of Shanghai . For straightening out blanks I saw the two most common methods was a small alcohol lamp with the blank not to close to the flame and the other method I saw being used was a paint stripper gun ,again it was kept about 12"away from the blank while using this .
There may be other ways of doing this but given the amount of bamboo trees and everything that is made in that part of the world out of it ,I think they have a pretty good idea of what is needed I have even been out for lunch and have been told while eating bamboo that the particular dish was not local as it had a different texture so I would think they know bamboo .
I actually still have a couple of blanks from there that I need to build some day
Cheers

Ahh, thanks for the info! I may bring it to a local fly shop and have them check it out..
