Got this information in an email that lists different and wacky uses for WD40.

Have I tried it? no. I am I curious? Hell yea!

Has anyone tried this?

I would be more concerened about using this and harming the fish. I am sure a small spray on the bait and thru the waters wouldn't harm the ecosystem very much. Would I empty a can in there? No.

What kinds of fish does this work for? I am assuming this works in lakes, do you put this on rubber or natural baits?

How the hell would someone find out that WD40 would work for fishing. I can't imagine hillbilly bob going out with a can of wd40 to add to baits and catch more fish. Its like saying a sponge cake with fix your plumbing issues.

never tried it but the main ingredient in WD40 is fish oil so it kinda makes sense. Theres also a bunch of other crap in there too though.

I don't know about the ingredients, but I was using it back in February for steelhead and it worked :)

Could have sworn I responded to this thread but I don't see my reply

As for how someone would have made this "discovery", have you ever had a lure get all rusty? Not a bad idea to treat them with some form of rust preventative from time to time.

I have been hearing about this forever, never really tried it. I thought that in the past the main ingredient was fish oil but was unaware it still was. I might be a little concerned with its reaction with some lines but it could be minimal.

Might just as well use cod liver oil and dip em in it IMO.

What did you spray it on?
Pretty much everything to prevent freeze up which was why I chose to use it in the first place. To tell you the truth I didn't see any difference in the number of strikes, but apparently some guys swear by it.

It'll cause mono to stretch more than usual after a while, but if you change your line after every outing you won't have to worry about that

How did someone make this discovery indeed?
How did someone catch a Lobster and decide that beyond the claws and shell there may be something good to eat? Or a Snapping Turtle?
Putting things in perspective Humans do a lot of weird things and I don't know who started them or how or why.

Never heard of the WD40 thing before, but it does have a sweet scent to it so maybe that's why it works, if it does. Not sure about adding it to our waters and how natural it is. I'm sure there are much more eco-friendly fish attractants though.

Alfie.

I think its smell might be partly why people are so surprised to hear that it works as a fish attractant.

What a Fish story!
Myth: WD-40 contains fish oil.
Fact:
Consumers have told us over the years that they have caught some of the biggest fish ever after protecting their fish hooks and lures with WD-40. We believe this legend came from folks assuming that the product must contain fish oil since it appears to attract fish. Sorry Charlie®, it just ain’t so.

WD-40 Company has taken steps to respect and conserve the environment, and encourages its users to do the same. While WD-40 can be used to help protect fishing equipment from rust and corrosion, WD-40 Company does not recommend using WD-40 to attract fish.

This is right off of the WD-40 site. I don't think any chemical content would be good for any ecosystem, no matter the size.

It's been a known secrets for a while in the usa. Back in the 80's a lot of guys were actually using in tournaments. It's now illegal in some lakes to do so. I've heard of stories of the DNR finning folks doing so with some big $$$ fines

WD40 contains petroleum distillates, so unless you are trying to entice a strike from that 1972 Ford Pinto resting on the bottom of the lake, you are going to poison whatever you catch with it......
