Yesterday at the river I decided to give it a try in one of the many pools to see if there was any late trout hangin around..
Instead, I found a huge school of monster bass, but I mean real beasts!....I could see them all no more than 2-3 meters away from me. I was using a yellow nymph, and in the 3rd cast...boom!, what a fight, a small mouth bass!!! I enjoyed every single second. it was quick and healthy released ;)

A reminder of some of the rules pertaining to out of season fish.

Accidentally catching an OOS fish: legal.

Taking a picture with an OOS fish: legal (contrary to popular belief).

Retaining an OOS fish: illegal.

Continuing to fish the same location with the same bait, and continuing to catch OOS fish: illegal. You need to switch baits or move to another spot, if you keep catching them.

Intentionally targeting OOS fish: illegal (goes without saying).

You may wish to delete everything in your post after "but I could say that it was at least 7 pounds", to prevent arshlochs from going into a tizzy.

Enjoy watching them spawn at this time of year. It's fun to take a canoe or kayak out on Lake Erie and see huge bass spawning in numbers close to shore. Many tribs will have bass in them in June when the season opens. They're a real hoot to hook up with in rivers.

Here we are into another month. The best news is

that on the last Saturday of this month, bass season

opens. It will also be another long weekend and the

beginning of the summer fishing season.

While the fishing is just beginning throughout the

spring season, things just seem to come to life in the

early summer. Most of the fish have spawned and got

back to normal. The water is full of minnows, and the

fish will really put on the feedbag. Then we get into

the hot mid-summer and the fish get hard to get until

fall comes back around.

But there is one fish that seems to bite all the time,

and that would be a bass. I have caught them in every

month on the calendar. I have caught them in 60 feet

of water in the middle of summer and caught them

in 2 feet of water in the middle of winter. That is why

people like to fish for them. They are one fish that has

a very hard time keeping their mouth shut. But the

easiest time to catch them is right now. That is why

the season is closed for them right now.

These fish are very protective of their young. After

the eggs are laid, the male bass stands guard over the

nest. His job is to keep the other fish from coming

along and eating either the eggs in the nest or the

tiny fry that are hovering over the nest. The males are

very aggressive toward anything that even gets close

to the nest.

One of our friends always had a nest or two in

the gravel at the end of his dock. We would stand

on the end of the dock and toss small stones into

the water so they would settle on the bottom close

to the nesting bass. That fish would come charging

over and grab each stone and haul it away from the

nest and then spit it out. Then it would rush back and

take up the sentry post again. It would put the run

on anything that came close, even swimmers. Big or

small, it would be run off or tackled.

This is why you cannot fish for bass at this time

of year. It would be like shooting fish in a barrel. Any

lure that even gets close to a bass guarding its nest

will get struck. When you drag it away from the nest,

the other small fish come in and eat all the baby fish

or all the eggs left in the nest. By the time the bass

that you caught and let go gets back home, there is

nothing left but a cloud of well-fed sunfish and an

empty hole in the gravel.

You cannot fish for bass until the season opens,

period. Catch and release is not an option. You will kill

all the young from this year’s hatch. This puts future

generations in jeopardy. The fish that hatch this year

are the fish that you will catch a few years down the

road.

Calm down people, as my subject says: I went for trout, not bass, I was using a fly which I think is a bit more suitable for trout than bass, but can't avoid them to eat whatever they want. We all here want a sustainable fishery; can't deny I enjoyed fishing it, and mistakenly stayed in the spot for a little while which I accept is my fault, but was I targeting that species? no, period.
btw...I also caught a little lamprey...weird catch.

I was not PERSONALLY ATTACKING you in anyway.

*SMILES* ... no worries.

Just USING the POST that has been made to highlight the importance of the BASS SPAWING SEASON.

We all have caught fish that are out of season.(INCLUDING MYSELF)

I certainly am not "throwing the first stone" , Appreciate the fact that you have released the fish.

For future reference: Just watch the POSTING of INFORMATION (Location etc)

There are others who will take what is there and abuse the situation.

As a suggestion: Why not re-edit the post and DELETE your Location.

other than that.... enjoy the beautiful weather (We sure could use some rain) and FISH ON!

Here is a picture of one I caught last year around this time while fishing for Pike

:

Just there other day ... while out fishing I saw some nice ones making a happy nesting home.

Funny thing was, there was a "CONVENTION" going on ... (Bass, Bowfin and Pike were all gathered in one little area).

Was kinda neat to observe.

LOL

there's quite the "Conversation" on this topic on another forum:

Why Bass Are o_O.s!

"I mean, it's not like a largemouth bass is a gamefish. They're really just green bigmouth carp, happy rooting around in warm, filthy water, and they breed like rats. Not to mention that they are pathetically easy to catch, and not even slightly challenging to land once hooked. And nobody ever talks about how good they taste... no surprise for a parasite-ridden fish that will thrive in any toxic chemical swamp. They may be the perfect fish for small children, old timers, cripples, and weekend warriors who consider fishing mostly an excuse to drink beer, if the nascar ain't runnin', but they're far from a gamefish that a true angler is going to spend much time pursuing. How much poetry, or decent writing of any kind -even a short story- has been written to extoll the virtues of the largemouth bass?"

GAURANTEED!

Nice fish!!
I've caught smallmouth bass in many occasions while steelheading and they sure fight hard..
I also hooked nice steelhead in exact same spot.. So guess you can't avoid them..
One thing I did however was stopped taking picture and released them as qucikly as possible..
(I'm not accusing the picture taken above.. )
Hope you catch nice steelhead next time
Thanks for the report and pics..

Where I fish bass are caught from the second week of the season till the steelhead leave. To minimize incidental catches one would have to use only roe bags all the time ,which nobody does.

during the opener i must have caught 5 Smallmouth's and all on roe bags, when these things are hungry they will attack anything in their sight.

holy crap!! smallies on roe... then I'm sure they will hit anything; I should try with exotic bait like bacon or.....fried bass :D
