I am going to buy 2 spinning rods for salmon this year and I am wondering which are some good ones?
It has to be capable of holding 14 pounds braided test line. I will be going to Le barons shop. I am looking for some good rods but also with good prices ($60 and below) each.

well i brought in le barons a lightning rod of berkley and i can handle up to 15pounds and up of salmon i got berkley lightning rod 8'6 medium 50$ below.. and its cheap price good for casting some spoon if you want there's another type of berkley its cheap price also the berkley tactics 50$ below i got a huge pike and salmon in my berkley lighting rod without problem 8)

Which line do you use one it?( LBS. and braided/mono)?

I have a 13' shimano clarus. Lots of backbone compared to the aventa rod I had, but at the same time flexible...

I wouldn't go lighter than 12lb mainline for salmon cuz they are super strong.

@fisher12 i have braided line 15pounds and im using 10lbs berkley vanish flourocarbon i dont have problem with berkley all my stuff is berkley lol last time last friday in my berkley cherrywod 10feet i landed a big male salmon lol i thought my cherrywood berkley are gonna snap lol by the way im using in river (erindale park) berkley cherrywood 10feet medium. and its 54.99 in le baron

ugly stick 7' + power pro 30lb = $60!!!

I got a Fenwick Canadian something, for 69.99 9ft it has a soft tip and can be used for salmon and trout... rated 10-25 lb test

Berkley Vanish Flouro is the WORST leader to use.
I would set that stuff on fire and walk away.

Here's my setup if I go salmon fishing in the rivers:
- 10' Medium action Shimano Convergence (good backbone to turn these big fish)... it's also the same rod I use for chucking spoons and lures at the piers.
- Islander Steelheader centerpin
- 10lb Raven mono main line
- 6-8lb Maxima leader material

lol i dont have a problem in berkley stuff i landed most of my fish in berkley stuff and berkley vanish is not giving me a trouble. i got salmon with vanish and bass and huge pike without problem.. i dont know why people saying berkley vanish is a crap?? for me is fine and works great 8)

Maybe it's cause you're using 10lb... that's pretty thick stuff. I have used 4lb and 5lb in the past and it sucked.

I don't know why you guys are going so heavy with the leaders. Drop it down a few pounds and you'll get more fish.
In gin clear water, you should go down to 3lb for steel B)

I'm a newb when it comes to salmon, but for those of us that throw spoons/rapalas off piers do you really need to tie a leader? I use 30lbs powerpro as my mainline and have been tying straight onto a snap swivel....

As far as rods go, when I decided to get out to the pier i picked up a Fenwick HMX 8'6" medium fast that seems to be good for tossing baits pretty far, have only hooked up twice on it, and it was perhaps a little overwhelmed by a big chinook in open water, but it held its own and is way more compact/portable than some of the bigger rods i saw.

How could you use 30 Lb line , that rod is rated up to less than 20 LBS.I am new too , so I am just wondering.

Can use 100lb line as your main line, then just put a 10lb leader for an example. From what I see there aren't much rods you'll find that are rated for much more then 20lb(unless you're getting very thick rods for downrigging in large bodies of water). In the end you just risk damaging the rod/reel by putting a much heavier line then what it's rated for but as long as you know what you're doing it won't be a problem.

I figured it was OK as the 30lbs power pro is only 8lbs diameter 8) Believe it or not I've still had a salmon almost spool me and break that line off port credit!

Here is the rod I use for spoons off the rocks.

You can use whatever rating braid on any rod as long as long a you have your drag setup correctly. Improper drag setup will cause line breaking or the rod.
You should be looking at the lure rating ex. 1/4 to 3/4 oz lures.
