Hey Everyone,

I got into some not so common tying material and was wondering what I could tie with it!

I got polar bear fur, arctic wolf fur, grizzly bear, beaver, and fox. Second two aren't really uncommon, just the first two, thanks guys

Kyle

Polar/grizzly bear and arctic fox are great options for wings and collars on streamer patterns...i have a patch of beaver im still struggling to find a use for other than dubbing

Imagine if there was an app, that you put in your materials and it tells you what flies can be made!?

....next big thing?

That'd be awesome!

My brother in law's a hunter so he gives me all these random feathers. Turkey, partridge, woodcock. He even found a dead owl once and plucked a bunch of feathers for me. Lol I just don't know what the hell to do with it??

My biggest advise to you is do some research, whether its a book or youtube videos, look up fly patterns you use or want to tie and build your collection around that.

I have boxes (more than 1 Rubbermaid) of vices, feathers, hackles and chenille that I have accumulated over the years, many of it being duplicates and materials I rarely use! To avoid this, buy good quality products, and products you will use but that will only happen once you have some practice and do some research.

Would be an awesome app though, if there was something like a cooking app where you put in your materials and get a fly output! (for all the programmers who view this forum)

Thanks guys,

Yeah this stuff was kind of given to me cause they were able get more than they'd ever need to tie haha

And as a new new tyer an app like that would be unreal!

i've got a couple patchs of moose fur that im trying to figure out a use for, best i could come up with is minnow backs for streamers, and use it for jigs

Many atlantic salmon patterns call for moose as a wing as well as black bear....i like to use moose mane for bodys on mosquito patterns as it makes a pretty realistic body and has some floating properties too

Egg patterns, intruders and woolly buggers....for egg patterns i like sizes from 8-12, 1/0 salmon hook shank for intruders(can go smaller or larger all depends on taste), and just about any size woolly buggers but i like a size 6 streamer hook about 4xl

^ #6 wooly buggers worked well for me as well. I fish them under a float but they should work on the fly too.

popsicle spey flies, 100% have had so many follows, and some viscious strikes on them, blue and white, blue and black, red and white, red and black
