What Do You Consider a Successful Day for a Charter/Guide Trip?

So I'm heading to Myrtle Beach soon and would like to charter an inshore fishing trip for 4 hours. I've found a capt. that'll do it for $250 with the primary fish being reds, flounder and sea trout. There's only 2 of us and I usually fish on a budget, hence my inflatable boat with 30 lb troller.

I would hate to spend that kind of money and only end up with like 1 or 2 redfish each. I want multiple like 5 or 6 each. Problem is, with fishing you never know! We've all been skunked before. And we've all had banner days on the water.

The going rate in Myrtle is actually $350 for 4 hours and even if the capt. could somehow arrange a split charter with some strangers, it would still come out to $100 each person at least, though I am paying for me and my gf.

Also considering renting a 17' carolina skiff for $157 all in. for 4 hours to fish the inter coastal waterway/creeks. Won't know where the fish are but I could troll while moving and then cast at various spots and hope for the best. Would bring like 5 rods set up with different lures and also shrimp.

Another idea is a party boat but I'm not up for going 15 miles out on the ocean.


Has anyone here ever chartered an inshore or near shore trip in saltwater? How much did you pay and what did you catch? Did you think it was worth the price?

What about at home? For great lake salmon or Dunnville cats or backwoods bass/pike/walleye, etc?


What do you consider to be a successful trip in terms of number of fish caught for the price you paid?

If your going to myrtle beach head on down to murrels inlet, amazing fishing, I'm not sure where it is but if you Google it it should come up. Not more then a 20 minute drive, I've caught shark,drum,flounder and lots more, bring decent rod line too, you may get into a tuna, I'd say 30lb line with at least a medium heavy rod, fit the charter part like, I got some guy that after we all got 1 fish the weather was getting bad so he took us in early by like an hour and we got a full refund so I guess it depends on who you get, man saltwater fish fit hard lol, best of luck to ya let us know how it goes

ya that's the place. sounds like you slayed that place. also sounds like you've been multiple times? was this from a charter guide?

i got 2 reels with 30 lb test on so i'll bring those as well. did you use leaders? every time i fished with a leader at home i've caught practically nothing. 90% of my catches of toothy fish at home were without leaders. mind you, i have had a few take off with my lure.

ya 250 total for the boat with capt. he's new but i got a recommendation from some pennsylvania guy online. $157 all in. to rent the boat myself.


i've seen deep sea charters come in with 13 wahoo and mahi mahi in the well before but i'll be inshore so not sure what kind of numbers to expect.

You via give me that guys number lol, I've been to the inlet about 5 times in all fished by my self taught myself there with my little pan fish rod that got ripped apart by a shark lol, let's just say that my reel wasn't in the seat fully, over there the waters never clear cleanliness east trips so no leader. My rig is a pyramid sinker with to lines going out wards one 6 inches off the bottom the other, 6 above that, use shrimp and cast out about half way from The canal, BEWARE OF CRABS lol

In the outer banks it was around there, abit higher i think. The guide didn't get us a single fish.

Do most people prefer to go with a guide not just to catch fish but to learn how to fish certain types of waters? I mean I am sure part of guiding is not just looking at catching a few big fish but it is more about learning what to use and where and most importantly WHY lol. Would people agree with me on that?

yep, i watch what the cap is doing when i take a lake o charter so i can do it myself, in south carolina, i i doubt hes gonna be going all the time, spending money on his own boat etc, so he probably just wants quantity, of course not jeopardizing his life in any way

I only do inshore flats guided charters. A lot of the deep sea guys are just out their for your money and know less then you do, this is just from my experience... I have had lots of luck on the flats and the guides seem very knowledgable. I would go for it.

For me it is not necessarily about the fish, it the guide puts me on 100 fish but doesn't teach me anything it is worth less to me then the guide that puts me on 2 fish but I learn a ton...

I think next season I am going to be fully licensed to guide on Rice Lake. I have had a great summer of fishing and got to pull out some nice fish. This year I tested myself to really go on and fish the waters and I think I passed my own test.

250 is cheap for a charter , and with charters you will get what you pay for. dont expect a 20 lb bull red or for him to be going long distances to the real hot spots, he likely well take you to some close spots where you catch a mixed bag of small fish. Which will still be a ton of fun but maybe not what you are after. I i recommend you rent a boat, if you can catch largemouth you can catch redfish,snook etc. i did a charter in florida and you literally are flipping jigs with shrimp into the mangroves. its a ton of fun and the shitty part is 4 hours goes by to fast. this winter when i go, well be renting a boat for sure.

They dont look like a good charter business. Spend a bit more money and get a real pro that knows the area really well.
