what hook is best for different fishes?

Obviously there are tons of different hooks and styles out there as well as different sizes and brands.

Im wondering if anyone can share tips of which hook to use for what kind of fish... or if they have a preference for a type of hook or brand and why.

like most.. i love fishing for bass... i just picked up some red offset wide gamakatsu hooks... size 2.. i dont know if this is too big? i plan to texas rig them to make them weedless.

I have never used offset hooks.. i have always been using the basic baitholder dollarama style hooks.. so this will be new for me.

I also do fish a lot in the weeds... can anyone tell me how those weedless hooks are with the guard. what size should i be looking at with bass fishing? also.. theres this new style "sickle hook" i saw.. what is difference from this and a normal hook?

Personally, I've noticed the wide-gap worm hook and siwash hooks as the two most common hooks for fishing multiple species.

Ahhh the world of hooks....

Catfish: I use size 6 circle hooks, any brand

Bass: Different size offset worm hooks, size depending on the size of my crayfish, senko, minnow...

Sunfish: Size 8 Aberdeen hooks

Carp: I use Aberdeen hooks (I cannot remember the size)

Pike: I use lures....


I never use hooks with weed guards (except of bass jigs) as I feel I need to set hook a lot harder and sometimes I take the bait out of the fishes mouth...

90% of the time I don't know whats going to bite and when general fishing I use a #6 or #4 baitholder hook. I used to be able to buy Mustad at LeBaron's by the box of 25 and they would last for years. Now they have smaller packs with higher prices.

I've used the #4 it's good for bass and walleyes. I rarely need any other hook and actually noticed less success with larger hooks.

If you're talking fly fishing, that is a whole different can of worms. There are so many more types.

It's my go to hook and has worked for years. When I'm after panfish and see they are feeding aggressivly and will swallow any regular hook then I'll change to a aberdeen or a carlisle hook just so to make it easier to remove.

NP Noob.

When I first went to LeBarons I was overwhelmed with all the hooks. Then the salespeople come up to you and ask what you want to fish for? Who knows what's going to bite? If you put a 1/0 bass hook on and you're not familiar with fishing specifically for bass you could end up with nothing and get frustrated. That's not going to encourage fishing. Start off with simple hooks and you can catch almost anything in the beginning then move up to species targeting.
