what is your go to bait for catfishing?

We have tried a number of different baits since we started going night fishing for channel and bullheads this year...we've tried cut suckers, chicken livers, crayfish, commercial stinkbaits, whole dead and live suckers, and nightcrawlers.
So far our top bait for most fish caught and biggest fish caught has been nightcrawlers. Cut baits have got a few but not too many numbers. My brother in law caught 2 cats this summer that were 20 pounds+. It was quite odd as the place he got them at usually only pans out small bullheads.

Worms, Shrimp and dead suckers are all really good catty bait.. but i swear those fish would take just about anything aslong as it stinks.

I use worms, shrimp and corn. I have gotten huge fish on shrimp but can't say that for the corn and worms. Also, I have to try suckers as well this year.

I have had really good luck this year using berkley catfish bait ,white bread and bacon in London.

I've had my best days using chicken livers. Worms and cut baits will also work. As already mentioned anything with a scent will work. Warning , a drunken friend tried eating some festering chicken livers and became, as one would expect, violently ill.The morale of this tale is don't mix booze and fishing.

whatever, next time ill just add "IMO" :)

I didn't mean to offend. Its just acrobatic doesn't come to mind when I think catfish.

But if your in to pickerel rigs, check out how to tie a paternoster rig. Thats what I'v been using for a while now, its probably saved me 20 to 30 bucks in the last 2 or 3 years.

no worries BlueWaterFisher,

wasnt offended, just wasnt sure which one you were being specific of.

caught a few catfish(bullheads(?)/baslam lake and rice lake) and they have always jumped out of the water at least twice(especially the big ones).

i dont normally target them either but ive caught them on perch minows and worms. kinda funny really.

Buddy i dunno what sorts of cats you;re catching but i want in..

Every cat i catch regardless of the species be they channel or bulls.. they always come in spinning..

Twisting and turning and ruining my entire rig...

Not to derail the thread, but that is the most DISGUSTING thing I've ever read on OFF.

All of my cats have been unintended catches, and all bullheads, no channels. They've all come on corn or worms for me, but like I said I've never targeted them. Judging by the responses so far, it seems like scent is key with cats -- the stinkier the better? I'm thinking though, (and this is based purely on the channel cat reports that I've read) that if you're after channel cats, location is 1 bait is 2?

Pretty much because you won;t find channel cats everywhere. Unlike bullheads that will even be in a ditch.

Best bait in my book is the good ol worm, snell a couple on and away you go. That allows you to target various species at once esp if the fishing is slow.

Sucker meat will only give you cats but with worms you get sheep, carp, cats and almost everything else in between...

Whats more important than bait is the rig one uses, because this isn;t always your hook line and sinker angling..
