What roe works the best

Just wondering what everyone thinks:

What kind of roe is the most effective for different species?

My choice would be

Rainbow: Brown eggs
Brown Trout: Coho eggs
Nooks: No pref
Coho: No pref

Wondering what everyone also thinks is the best cure for eggs? I've been doing a natural sea salt cure lately which has worked well.

Atlantic eggs by far!

lol I use bow eggs for bows for the most part later in the fall. Until then chinook do just fine.

I only use chinny roe.. on occasion.. like once every few years, I will milk a brown.. :smile:

Don't cure my eggs either.. As natural as can be!! Oh and a vacumm sealer can do wonders..

Let the fish bleed out fully if the eggs are still in skein. If shes loose then just wash them. Some times I don't even wash them just drain the fluid (keeps the smell)
Wash eggs in purified water (no chemicals), or the water you get the fish from. Put in a bag and put sea salt on them and roll them around. Let cure for a couple hours and then put in the freezer.

I haven't done it in years but I do remember something about never using any salt with iodine in it. The best is pickling salt. Get a bowl fill 3/4 with hot water, add salt until no more will dissolve. Add eggs until all covered with water, the eggs will swell from absorbing the salt. Put in fridge over night, next day drain the water and freeze the eggs.

The final eggs has to be tied up in bag, only boron cured eggs become stiff enough to be single hooked. Anyone ever tried to cure with sugar?

I haven't done it in years but I do remember something about never using any salt with iodine in it. The best is pickling salt.

Sea salt is all natural and shouldnt have iodine added to it. I have done it this way for years and never once had a a problem. I've always drained the water before salting never tried it in water. I also dont go overkill in the salt to try and keep it as natural as possible. Borax is an other way but i dont like the look of the eggs after.

I do it the exact same way. Never had any issues

in my opinion killing trout for roe is stupid when chinnok/coho will catch just as good most days. not to say i havent harvested an early lake o rainbow or two over the years for the spring run.

PFFT! atlantic roe ...i only use that stuff for chumming.....that fishheads roe was working nice that day...i got a smash on my first drift with that bag you gave me under tough conditions. screaming run then a break off in 0.5 seconds. im gonna get some for the spring me thinks instead of bonking rainbows

oh ya to answer the question i use roe i get from a dead chinok floating down and have caught lots of fish its not what you use its how you present it i use red worms that i cultivate myself most of the time depth speed and size are the three main things to consider not what you are useing

Beef has a point. Roe isn't the only option. On opener I had success with both trout beads and nymphs and not once needed real roe

I remember some time last year there was a craa member who was complaining about anglers having too much success because they were using roe.

I've seen worms out-fish roe on several occasions.
Yesterday actually!

But presentation is the biggy!
Well presented fake roe will outfish poorly presented fresh roe on certain days.

Somedays the fish can see 100 roe bags drift by in any colour but not give a flip... Then they see a worm and the rest is history.
