Whatever happens to bragging rights of fighting and landing fish using lightest possible mono line weight? Advance angler use to aim to try to lower their line weight usage for the challenge.

Isn’t that how fishing became a sport? Adding element of risk and uncertainties, a chance for the fish to get away and beat human patience and experience! Landing a fish was not only the main excitement in fishing, or everyone would be using 25 lb mono line and land the fish in no time. Not all anglers want to put their catch on the table then, landing their personal best fish using lightest line, and for a long time was the story to brag about for years to come.

If we all want to ensure we land the fish today, we were told to use heavier expensive braided line weight and sophisticated advance reel. Less chance of skill needed and less fish lost. The pros were the ones creating trends, just yank the 5 lb bass right inside the boat since no worry of 50 lb braided line breaking or fear of losing the trophy catch. Fighting fish for long time has been discouraged today.

Since the invention of Braided line:
1.Fighting fish longer has been frowned upon, claimed to lower mortality rate of fish during a long fight.

2.More profitable for retailers if braided line were sold.

3.Though more feel using braided line, but more visible compared to mono line, now we need to invest in Fluorocarbon leader to cover the visible braid line. Fishing seem to get even more complicated than ever. Just like the trends in our home décor. 40 Years ago , all homes were only with hardwood floors. Then as trend changed and invention of carpet, we added carpet on top to keep the place more soft and insulated, then the trend today is to go back to hard wood floors , but add an expensive rug(to not look like carpet,) since the Hard wood floor was making our feet cold during winter months. We then have to take our shoes off when we enter our home, since what we had invested expensively might get dirty, The expensive rug area should only be used during an invited guest.

Many different type of line today, colors, strength, some floating some sinking, invisible and some vibrant, multicolored, etc…. Imagine going to a coffee shop and getting confuse on the type of coffee available, when all we want was something hot with caffeine!

More advance drag system and smoother reel have entered the market to help us not lose our catch. Then on the contrary, We take out the drag on a Centerpin Reel since fighting fish on a dragged reel is not much of a challenge and for the average angler.

Then we have to catch and release our catch for future reproduction, but substantiate/allowed to kill one or two female for the roe, so we cans use the bait to catch more fish. What about the consequence if every one just catch one female each season? How about those who promote by example or believe fresher roe/skein attained every so often can catch more fish that they will release? Then we throw away un-used roe believing we can get new ones since we can catch more fish.

I think it all depends on who you are fishing with...

Personally I stick to 6lb mono for 95% of my fishing other then my 7 footer i toss for pike (8lb) and my salmon pier rod (20lb braid). For me I like the thrill of hooking a nice fish and having to use a bit of skill and know how to get it in without breaking it off. I have friends who use heavy braid on their rods and just reel the fish across the top of the water (essentially) and they have just as much enjoyment fishing as I do.

Is one way better then the other... no. Are they different approaches....yes! And that is fine in my book, people will be attracted to different aspects of the game. I enjoy having to "fight" or "play" the fish a bit more then the guy who can crank them right in with the heavy braid and not even need a net to get them onto shore or in the boat but if his enjoyment is being able to land every fish he gets on the line then all the power to him.

a lot of c&r guys beef up a bit because the faster you land the fish, there is an increased survival rate. something about lactic acid buildup in the muscles of the fish i think plus other factors. if you wanna play a fish for an hour, go for it, but releleased fish will have a high mortality rate . i try to ride the line between fun and ethical.

this is true that over exhausting a fish is detremental to their health however when a fish is landed in a net or beached but is still hot it rolls and thrashes around getting mud/ netting all in its gills or dropped because it still struggles. My cousin who was avid outdoorsman and naturalistr would cut the hookson his lures, to him it was all about seeing how fish react to baits and enticing the strike.

I have thought about this. no hook fishing, and if it is legal out of season????

me and a few friends were wanting to try something out, going to the creeks before the season opens or after its closed, tying on spoons, spinners and live bait BUT with NO HOOKS at all.... i do be leave fishing is the act of using a line and hook to catch fish, but if you have no hook at all, just a rod line and some type of spoon or bait, is it fishing? or just teasing?
i know it may sound funny, and would be if a MNR co came to give us tickets for "fishing", but with out hooks its not really fishing right? or wrong?

i have wanted to try this in the forks of the credit with worms. but im sure it would put people up there in a frenzies!

As a society the more we learn the more we grow. Back then it was impressive to say you fought a 10lb steelhead for an hour on a 3lb leader, now we know the damage that this can cause. The catch is more impressive the lighter the tackle is, but to me there is nothing impressive about catching a fish on undersized tackle. Not only is there the issue of fighting the fish to exhaustion, there is also the issue of breaking fish off all of the time and leaving them with hooks and lures in their mouth. For example using 6lb mono flipping for bass in really heavy weed cover with tons of lily pads around just doesn’t make sense, you are going to break off more fish than you land which isn’t anything to brag about.

I actually see a lot more topics similar to this one where heavy tackle is talked down.

I use what ever lb line is recommended for the fishing I do, that allows the fish to be released healthy and allows me to have the "thrill of the fight".

I think some species are more fragile/sensitive than others. It's a good idea to release trout quickly, but catfish never seem to die... tough breed. Seasons also can determine survivability - I know catching lakers in the summer depths are affected by the change in pressure in bringing them up to the surface and exhausted by the time you get them in the boat. Kinda like reeling in a stick sometimes... bass are usually resilient, you can struggled them in if your drag is set right even with a heavier setup, take a picture, and release successfully. If you are fishing catch and release, use common sense to that end.

There's a time and a place for everything. One of my favourite things to do is fish with my ultralight spinning combo, and 4lb fluoro line. This gets strikes all the time. The thing is, I can't always control what hits it. I throw small baits, sometimes jigs, sometimes swimbaits, and even spinners or tiny cranks. here's a list of fish I've caught on my Ultralight, only using 4lb line:

- 5 oz Crappie
- 1 lb Smallie
- 3 lb largie
- 25 inch pike
- 7 lb carp
- 12 lb cat

It just goes to show that with skill and your drag set up properly, you can haul fish in regardless of the gear you're using. However, I'd much rather use my baitcaster when targeting bigger fish. knowing you can pull them out of weeds or around that tree stump without your line snapping off is always a +1.

Just my 2 cents. Tight lines all.
