Hey folks,
I'm thinking about trying to get a trip together with me and my good buds this winter, hopefully a 3 or 4 day venture. Being from london we don't get a whole lot of good ice fishing in without driving 3 hours each way to simcoe

What I'm looking for is some recommendations where we can fish mid-January and (hopefully) catch a couple lakers and pike. I was thinking lake nipissing but we'll be on foot with a pop-up tent and its a pretty big lake (money is tight for all so we'll be going for cheap accommodations, a hut rental is probably past our budget)

Is there a smaller lake that anyone would recommend thats within a 6 hour drive of london i.e.south of sudbury where we can hopefully hook into some big fish, and if that fails do some solid perching? Or can you reach some good spots on nipissing by foot within a 45 min walk?

If theres someone who is local around there who would show us around a lake in exchange for a couple beers and some good conversation, even better!

Thanks in advance

Hey IRJ4,

He said he was looking for Lakers or Pike, or Perch. Not walleye.
Hello fishheads, It was a friendly suggestion for a fun time out with friends. Not that you would know the feeling

The issue with planning an ice trip so far in advance is there are too many variables.
1) Ice conditions are unknown
2) Fishing may be "better on the other side of the lake"
3) Snow conditions

I would follow the ice fishing forums closely and see what the most current ice conditions are before making any bookings or plans (once you establish a target species)

Safest bets are Perch and Pike as they are in the same area and usually these areas are first to have safe"r" ice.

You can contact local hut operators to where you are going and see what the ice conditions are or when they are putting their huts out (or if they are out already depending on when your calling)

My $0.02.... or is it $0.05 now that the penny is discontinued?

If you want a spot with the best fishing and outfitters.
Book now !
They'll let you know conditions couple days ahead of your booking date.
Lot of the best spots guys book when they're leaving for following year.
Snooze you lose.
By the time you add accommodation costs you'd be better off to go the on ice bungalow route.
