some say if you wet to the bone-almost being dragged away by the current with 100% chance of hurricane --steelhead go nuts
others say ---nope the water needs to calm down and clear up--aint gonna catch anything in that soup.///

OMG WHICH ONE IS IT!!!

Hey schnip,

Try it out. Fishes can be unpredictable at times. What's the worst that can happen? If you dress appropriately rain can't harm you.

I believe that the only time I know I won't even have a chance of catching something is if I don't go out lol

i get that--i was out today--river was really high and fast and dirty===i try no matter what the weather however i would love to be able to sdtreamline my efforts as this has become a passion of mine--this eternal hunt for the fish you guys call chrome...lol

Sometimes the best experience is the one you learn yourself. When I'm trying something new in steelheading (particularly new locations) I'll often go out several times before I ever catch a fish. But I try to take something away from each trip. Eventually you'll know how to find and catch the fish in any situation.

On that note, I haven't had much luck with fishing in this kind of weather. Then again, I don't like going out in the rain so I can't say I've actually put in much effort to know any better  I'm sure there is a special set of techniques that people use to catch fish in this kind of weather.

You gotta be pretty hardcore to go out in this rain though haha

i spent two days in it --next weekend there will be an expedition tent with me in it in a remote part of my local river.....i am not giving up....yet

That's the spirit! Persistence is key!

I was lucky enough to land 2 steels when I first started chasing chromes. After that memorable day I was skunked for quite some time before I started landing them again. haha

hey schnip, there's nothing wrong with being persistence, just make sure you keep safe, at this weather, it's a toss up for me, if i feel the "itch", i get jittery and get my fix no matter what. just remember, if you're getting skunk heavily (2hrs with no action) you will be hitting the "wall" pretty hard. and by wall i meaning...i could be home under the sheets...stretching my feet...logging to OFF saying something like..."'d love to be out in the water right now and go hunt for some chrome"...

if you decide to go...be safe my friend.

When the water is dirty, you need to up the bait size and really make it visible. If the water is very very dirty, that you cant even see more than an inch in... its pretty much a write off. I've had some amazing days in brown water that had some visibility to it. My advice is to keep at it schnip, every day spent on the creek has some lesson to be learned.

Generally in the fall when the water starts clearing up after a heavy rain, that will be a good time 8)

So in a way it's kinda both.
