Man oh man
Stop the insanity ur are killing me
Lol
Let me guess bottom bouncing again?

What's a "legit" bottom bouncing set up since less than a month ago people called it flossing? I'm not saying OP flosses btw.

Blair
Thanks for the info on bottom bouncing. It is definitely a deadly technique and will work when nothing else works.

I will be out Sunday with my float rod and a bottom bouncing set up. Maybe I will see u out there

OH man... here it goes: RANT! lol

seriously, what you said i do not take badly ... no harm intended, im sure.
HOWEVER: let me discuss what BOTTOM BOUNCING really is, and clear up any doubts.

So, I have been fishing for almost 40 years now, sure dont know everything, and I sure get my share of luck.
I am CATCH & RELEASE 100% and try my best to always adhere to being the best of a CONSERVATIONIST and ETHICAL SPORT FISHERMAN.
I truly believe the beautiful fish are there for ALL of US to catch, enjoy, and have that opportunity another day.

BOTTOM BOUNCING is the ORIGINAL method of catching anything! (other than the wonderful art of FLY FISHING)
The fish can not have more NATURAL of a PRESENTATION than seeing or smelling the bait on the Bottom.

I use a #8 lazer egg hook with ONE SINKER (#4 split shot) about 24 inches from the hook (just above my Swivel). I loose about 10 set ups a day (if not more) getting snagged on the bottom rocks and logs. This is life. Of course at certain holes, I have learned where to avoid the snags.

Most FLOSSING occurs by idiots, during the SALMON RUNS. Ever see the morons out there with 10 lbs of weight (Right by the hook) and using a Treble hook. Boy I wonder what they are doing. This year at the Humber I found (3) treble hooks the size of my hand! Seriously! If it wasnt so pathetic ... I would laugh.

99.9% of all the STEELIES i catch, i NEVER SEE THEM! Ièm counting on the conditions, the reading of the water and some good luck to produce the results.
I believe alot of the confusion occurs within the VAST FLOAT COMMUNITY. Dont get me wrong, I have a nice FLOAT SET UP and have spent 1000 of hours stalking and tracking them through every kind of water. Recently, I have found that MY RESULTS have almost tripled when just using my SPINNING COMBO and BOTTOM BOUNCING.

Ever single wonderful catch has SMASHED THE BAIT! You have to keep the line tight and learn to feel the difference between the rocks and real hits. It took me MANY YEARS and thousands of SNAGS to figure this techique out.
And ... who would of thought, im still learning and improving.

You wont see anyone in the Niagara river FLOAT DRIFTING, the fish are all sitting on the bottom!

Thanks for letting me get that one off my chest, again no harm in stimulating conversation.

See you out there!
Cheers

Thanks for the info! I wasn't trying to instigate, I wanted a legitimate response to clear up my confusion since I'm not very familiar with fishing rivers.

What you say makes a lot of sense. I've read over and over again that you need to get the bait to the bottom to get to the slower current near the bottom. Obviously the most logical thing is the technique to get it straight down. Plus I'd imagine false hits are more exhilarating than watching a lifeless float.

Very nice!

Awesome fish. 90 % of the westcoast bottom bounces for fish because it works. Its called drift fishing there.

And, on the US side of Lake O also. I had a guided steelhead trip on the Salmon River in NY, and it was 100% bottom bouncing. The guide was hooking a lot of chrome, and I was not doing so well (being less adept at detecting strikes without the benefit of the float). The thing is, bottom bouncing is a skill. As Blair pointed out, it takes a lot of time and practice to master this art.

Welcome aboard point defiance!

Nice fish, you fishing at OLD MILL?

I use this techinc in the humber watershed and it is great for browns, use a dew worm instead of roe. Hit a 5lb Male late in the season, he was hanging out with a 31/2 lb female. it's amazing the fish in there and no anglers what a treat.

The guys in NY use special weights that don't get hung up on bottom... I'm curious as to whether they carry them at BPS or Lebaron etc... :?:

Ever tried slinky weights. Its basicaly bb shots inside of a parachute cord. You can customize how much lead you need. Then just burn the edges close.

I' m originaly from Seattle. Bottom bouncing is used alot. This is my first year here, so still adjusting to how things are done around here.

Yes .. sometimes. It's convenient for me (TTC) and there really are some nice spots.
I find I have to "work harder" to find and catch em on outings compared to other locations, but that fishing.
Salmon run was exceptional this year.

Funny how alot of fisherman have forgotten the "lowly worm" in their arsenal. Shame, ... after any rain or runoff (melt) the Trout are looking for them!
When possible (and within regs) I use crayfish. Absolute KILLER BAIT!

I have never seen a river Trout/Bass not SMASH good ole crayfish.

cheers,
blair

That's a great Idea using crayfish may help keep the chubs off my worm, where do you get crayfish from? When i get too many chubs I use a small one for bait it works good too especially when it eats my last worm!
I also like using european nightcrawlers in clear, low water, great for steelhead too.

Is Old mill open to fish all year? Is it currently frozen over? Thanks for the info I really appreciate it!

No worries... *SMILES* sorry took awhile to respond - XMAS busy.
To answer your questions:

Hey Blair Thanks for the reply, My buddy and I are planning on going up north on the 27th. Either Thornbury or Owen Sound or both.

Looks like it's going to be really cold on Christmas day so it may be a waste of time with ice or slush but is somewhat of a tradition for us.

Also my Brother lives 2 subway stops from old mill, I have been trying to get him into steelheading and he lives right there. Hopefully 2011 I will find some spots with him. I never fished Old mill.

I am not sure why but I live close to the credit but usually fish out East, habit I guess. BTW I have a good stock of european Nightcrawlers as I have my own worm bin. In the spring I add them to my compost bin and triple my supply in about 2 month.
The only problem with euros is they do not survie the winter outside. I guess us anglers always find a way to be envirnmental and trifty.

One day I am sure we will hook up together maybe after the spring wash at Old mill.

I wish you luck on your niagra trip and a Merry Christmas!

I wish i could be as lucky as you guys with the humber, cause i've been there a bunch of time, being skunked everyone. I've had alot of sucess on bronte and the grand but I just can't seem to find the sweet spots on the humber or credit for some reason. Reason for this post though i'll offer ya a ride blair if your willing to show me some credit or humber secrets haha..just let me know the day..cause my spots are either frozen or done on the 31st of dec. Let me know, my car has heat, and no crazies (TTC)..pm me..

nice fish, i agree with everything you've said about bottom bouncing. given the right conditions and fished properly bottom bouncing is deadly.
there is one thing though that i do have to disagree with you, plenty of people almost only strictly float fish the Niagara and do well too. that being said a lot of adjustments must be made to get your bait to hold in the faster stronger water. each to their own i guess.
