I've been eyeing some ultralight reels for a future camping trip and other light-pack outings. Trouble is, they've all got tiny, narrow spools that won't cast well nor hold enough line if I hook into something mighty.

I found the US Reel 180 that seems to be what I'm after in a reel. Light (7oz) and a nice big spool. But there are some disastrous reviews about them and they're not cheap, about $70 bucks now.

Well then there's the Pflueger Arbor, but it's pushing 10oz for the same capacity :(

MA,

Why are you looking for this type of reel??? That might help us provide some insight.

Personally, I'm not a fan of using this type of reel for shore fishing, but they are deadly for jigging etc.

With this type of narrow spool, when you cast the line coils will come off rather quickly and not very smooth, it will decrease your casting ability.

What are you planning to use for line??? If you do want a ultralight reel, I'd be looking at 6-8lb braid, or perhaps Berkley Nanofil, something with nice small diameter. You can fit 150 yards of 8lb Powerpro on an ultralight reel easily.

On my camping trips last year I brought a cheap, light, plastic reel from Walmart. That broke on my last trip of the year. So I'm looking for a new set-up to stow in my backpack, hopefully as compact and lightweight as possible but still reliable. In this application it would be fished from a canoe.

Line, preferring to use 6lb mono because it's cheap. Hence my desire for a deep spool.

I could just bring a full-size set-up with me, but it would be another piece of dead weight to add on to the pack... and the little things add up.

I would run with a full size set-up, I know it may weight more but at least you KNOW what it will do and whatit will not do.

This summer I am planning a back-pack trip aswell, and I am gonig to run with a fullsize 7 foot rod and reel spooled with 10 to15LBS braid AND a Teliscopic 6 foot rod with a Light reel on it spooled with 6 lbs floarocarbon.

I know they suck, but could you suggest a decent telescopic rod?

If you can find anything by D.A.M. you should be good to go. I see them over here once in a while, not sure which store has them though. They are big in the market in europe where compact cars and telescopic rods are the rule so you can be guaranteed its a good rod.
