Good morning all!
Throughout the years I have been fishing, I think I have wet a line in the winter once or twice (both times with no success). However, I have had the itch lately, and have decided that I am going to take the fly rod out this weekend and give it a shot on some rivers around my area that still aren't iced over.
As you can tell by my name, I live in the Madoc area (zone 18), and will be looking to hook-up on some Pike action on the fly.
I guess I was just wondering if any of you vets have any advice for fly presentation for pike in the winter?
Any retrieval patterns seem to work better in the winter?
What's the best way to keep ice off of my guides?
What type of habitat should I be looking out for (i.e. slow, deep channels, pools, etc)
The weekend looks like it may be sunny (although a tad chilly), and I can't wait to get out to see if I can catch my first sub-zero (and hopefully first Pike on the fly) fish!
Thanks for your help!
Cheers,
Cody
